  • Great atmosphere
  • Very versatile and entertaining songs

Being exposed to so many different music releases, I more and more start enjoying different kinds of genres. One of them is definitely progressive rock. There have been rather frequent reviews in here of this genre. On 30th January, the band Plantoid released their album Flare. I had a listen.

Plantoid – About The Artists

Plantoid is an experimental prog-rock band from Brighton. The quartet consists of Chloe Spence (vocals / guitar), Tom Coyne (guitar), bassist Bernardo Larisch and drummer Louis Bradshaw. Spence and Coyne met at college and founded the band. They are releasing music since 2019. In 2024, they shared their debut album Terrapath.

Plantoid – Flare – Track by Track

The nine song album lasts 48 minutes.

1. Parasite

The English band kicks off with Parasite. The song is playful with a rough note from the very beginning. After some 90 seconds, the 6:28 minute track turns into a rather fine listen, driven by the high, angelic voice by Chloe Spence. This middle section style stays on until the rocking and powerful coda. An interesting starter with a nice plot.

2. Ultivatum Cultivation

Ultivatum Cultivation has been shared as a single before the release of Flare. This time, the band’s lead singer joins in very early. The sound of this song is very groovy, but also a bit of pop-ish due to the accentuated singing. Platoid develops an interesting plot, in which the sound leans towards industrial elements later and feels dark and a bit of frightening. It also works with sudden breaks, which leads to a very entertaining listen.

3. The Weaver

After a comparably brief intro, The Weaver alters between dreaming and more powerful sections. Chloe is in focus in the vocal parts, the instrumentalist do just what is right to underline the story. Good vocal and melodic storytelling meets a nice dramatic structure in here.

4. Dozer

Flare now presents two additional already released songs. The first one is Dozer. The song starts with rather present drums and is also driven by good work on the bass and guitar. This is another song exceeding the six minute mark. As it is presenting new elements over the whole duration, the song is a catching one, indeed.

5. Good For You

Good For You is another epic track. It starts with a slow, fairy tale-alike opening, before the song increases its intensity. Even though later parts also have darker and more rocking elements, it keeps its fine touch.

6. Worn

While most of the songs on Flare are really long compared to nowadays mainstream tracks, it also presents two shorter tracks. Worn, which is almost four minutes long, is likely still a rather epic one in 2026 matters. Similarly to the predecessor, it presents a fine sound. The instruments create the right melodic foundation, which leads to very balanced listen.

7. Splatter

Less than three minutes – Plantoid feel to rush through Splatter. There is no time for an extensive intro, the song starts quickly and presents a fast, slightly nervous sound. Especially as this is quite a contrast to the songs before, this keeps the record versatile and interesting. A good choice with some nice instrumental twists.

8. Slow Moving

As the title suggests, Slow Moving is calming down the atmosphere again. The accentuated vocals remind of the beginning of the album. Overall, the song feels fragile and vulnerable. I really like its style.

9. Daisy Chains

Daisy Chains is closing the album. With 7:27 minutes, the song is definitely not a fast farewell. After an intense guitar opening, the song also presents these fine and melodic moments. However, as much as Platoid can be loud and powerful in a song like theis, there are also some very calm moments, which spread a feeling of loneliness. A great musical statement at the end of this nine song set.

Plantoid – Flare – Track by Track

There is a lot of musical expertise in Plantoid and this album. I really like how the British band is playing with different sounds and elements. They mange guiding you through very different moods and stories in these nine songs. This overall leads to a very entertaining and catching listen.
