What are you doing as a hobby travel blogger when your company (the professional work…) is requesting you to meet a certain time in the office – and all the public transport to your home is interrupted due to maintenance? You check out some hotels! That was about the situation I had in June and July 2023, where practically all public transport from Leverkusen to Cologne has been unreliable. The first hotel I checked out was the Mercure Cologne City Friesenstrasse (Mercure Köln City Friesenstraße), which is actually really close to our office. Here is my review of the Accor Hotel.
Mercure Cologne City Friesenstrasse – Location
The hotel is located in the Friesenstraße, which is quite in the heart of the party and restaurant district in Cologne. You find a wide range of all kinds of international cuisine around. However, there are also bars, small shops and a Rewe supermarket within a few minutes walk. Especially during more crowded times and the weekend, this may also mean that the area around the hotel is crowded.
The traffic situation is really nice. You have a roughly three minutes walk to the Friesenplatz underground, which is served by five different lines. Underground line 5 brings you to Cologne Main Station (and Cologne Cathedral) in two stops. Walking distance are 15 minutes, roughly. Many other attractions may be easily reached by public transport. The Friesenplatz as such, which is some two minutes away, is nowadays also a drug consumer area unfortunately.
Mercure Cologne City Friesenstrasse – Room
I booked a standard room at a refundable rate in June 2023, Tuesday to Wednesday. The rate is not public. I used that for numerous other reviews already (travel industry rate), but the Mercure has been the first hotel which really checked it. The room has a nice size and despite of the very central location, it felt rather quiet. The furnishing does not feel too modern, but it is absolutely fit for purpose. The mini bar was empty – they now sell drinks and snacks at a kiosk at the reception. I did not like the bed too much, as it felt very soft to me – but that si rather a matter of taste. One of the beds has light switches right next to the pillow, so the choice of bed was easy. However, if you use the room with two persons, this may be bothering. At least this class of rooms does not have air conditioning, which is bothering in summer.
While the living and sleeping area was fine, I struggled with the bathroom. Despite the bathroom comes with a bathtub with shower, it was very narrow and reminded me of some Paris hotels. Furthermore, there were some maintenance issues. The most straightforward one has definitely been that the soap holder at the bathtub was broken out of the wall. The amenities (large dispensers for body wash and shampoo were located on the sink. The toilet is localed behind the door, which increased the feeling of being i a rather narrow spot.
Mercure Cologne City Friesenstrasse – Breakfast
Breakfast at Mercure Cologne City Friesenstrasse costs 18 EUR. The quality of the dishes provided was absolutely nice, the selection was absolutely okay. However, the Mercure does not offer something which is blowing your mind. The do a good job, the staff is friendly and very attentive. In case the hotel is booked out, the breakfast room, which is also the hotel restaurant in the evening, might be a bit limited in size.
Mercure Cologne City Friesenstrasse- Service
The WiFi in the hotel is working very fine. The hotel does not drive a gym, which has been rather surprising to me. I would not call the check-in really welcoming- the receptionist was not overwhelmingly friendly to me. Partially, this may have been due to the fact that he also did not feel really having a high level of routine. It was also the first stay under this special rate, which did not credit my Accor All status – which is a mistake in my point of view. The check-out was more friendly and efficient. However, in both cases I had to wait for an English speaking guest at the reception – the level of English was at most average in the hotel.
Mercure Cologne City Friesenstrasse – My View
The stay at the Mercure has been solid. The welcoming and the room had some issues, the rest of the service of the hotel was a fine experience. The location is excellent, if you don’t care about noise, though. Overall, the hotel is a solid choice for a city stay.
