I just had to see a home match KI Klaksvik during their amazing 2023 UEFA Conference League campaign. Thus, right before their Slovan Bratislava match at Torsvollur National Stadium, I arrived at Faroe Islands Airport (FAE). From there, I traveled on by rental car. After my first car rental on the Faroe Islands has been with RentYourCar.Fo, I chose local provider Arctic Rental Cars.

Arctic Rental Cars – The Rental

I had a two day rental, from Thursday early afternoon to Saturday the same time in late November 2023 / early December 2023. The total rental, including full coverage insurance and airport rental fees was 1159 DKK, roughly 155 EUR. However, I also included  WiFi with unlimited data (85 DKK / day) and a flat fee for the shorter Faroe Islands’ tunnels (Vagar Tunnel and Nordoyar Tunnel, 95 DKK / day), which lead to a total rental of 1519 DKK. The category I booked was a Group A car, equivalent to a VW Polo, The category I received is a Kia x-ceed, which is likely an upgrade.

The rental had to be paid at reservation, but was refundable until a couple of days before the requested rental date.

Arctic Rental Cars FAE Airport  – Location & Office

Practically all car rental companies at Vagar Airport (FAE) are having offices in the rental car facility, which is right nex tto the terminal building. I already gave you some impressions of the building in my RentYourCar.Fo review. The Arctic Rental Cars office is located right opposite of that peer. However, my late November 2023 rental was definitely an off-peak operation, so that the rental worked with an interesting automated process (see below).

Arctic Rental Cars FAE Airport- Receiving The Car

As said, during my rental period, the office of at Arctic Rental Carswas not staffed. However, the process worked really smoothly. All the administrative work like checking the drivers licence, paying the deposit (which was rather small due to the full service insurance) etc. worked online. The rental car facility is having WiFi access from the airport. Before the rental I received an e-mail with a link. After I received my luggage, I went to a key box in the lobby of the rental car facility. The hyperlink in the e-mail activated a functionality to open the correct compartment. I just needed to press a button and a one of the small doors opened, releasing the car key and an approximate parking location of the car.

Faroe Islands Airport (FAE) is not too large, so that it took a bit of searching for the car (especially as it was almost located at the most remote postiion from the terminal), but overall everything was rather handy. Arctic Rental Cars did not have reserved parking spots for their vehicles during my rental. Existing damages were quite nicely marked by stickers on the car, which made it very handy to check the car and identify issues.

The WiFi box I rented was in the car, the password has been printed on the device. Unfortunately, the remaining battery capacity was only 27%, which I did not like at all. You may re-charge the box in the car very slow. Especially if you want to make a walk after arrival, the capacity would not have been sufficient. My guess is that the car has been prepared several days before the in-fact rental, so that the box lost capacity in the meantime. Having said that, this also means that I do not expect similar issues in high season / summer time.

Arctic Rental Cars FAE Airport – Returning The Car

The return of the car was more or less in line with the inception of the rental. I dropped off the car in a spot in the same area where I received it. I left the WiFi box in the car and dropped the key in a key drop at the bottom of the Arctic Rental Cars key safe. After the rental, it took almost a week until I received a Credit Note by e-mail. This document is nothing but an invoice about  the deposit. It included the initial deposit, potential road fees (in my case: for the Eysturoy Tunnel) and leads to the part of the deposit which is paid back.

The late date suggests that due to the low season, the car had a couple of days on the airport parking lot before contract close. Due to the zero self retention rate, this is rather uncritical. Nonetheless, this might also support my assumption why the WiFi box was far below its capacity.

The Car – Kia x-Ceed

As said, I had a Kia x-ceed, which is a really nice car for the Faroe Islands. The mileage was still very low, at some 36,000 km. However, the car did show that it required a regular service since 7,000 kms. This simply does not raise your confidence in it. As you drive rather slow, you might prolong the service intervals of cars on the Faroe Islands, but that felt a bit too much for me.

Arctic Rental Cars FAE Airport – My View

Overall, I really liked renting a car with Arctic Rental Cars. The experience in summer might be completely different. I though have to state that I really loved the automated rental process with the online-accessible key box. However, I can’t do the rating without having impact by the late maintenance service and the low WiFi box charge. Additionally, receiving the final invoice a week after rental is a bit too long in my point of view.
