A Trip To Nordradalur (Faroe Islands, Pictured Story)

There are so many lovely spots on the Faroe Islands. Especially if you have sunny weather, the scenery is close to unbeatable. In this Pictured Story, I take you to a small village, which is very close to the capital Torshavn. Here is my post about a short drive to Nordradalur (Norðradalur).

Nordradalur – Location & Access

Nordradaulur is a small village on the West coast of the main islands Streymoy. It is a some 15 kilometers drive from Torshavn and leads you along the scenic Oyggjarvegur, from where you take the small road to the village. There are no services in the village itself. However, there is a gas station with snack services if you head on on the scenic main road North towards Faroe Islands Airport (FAE).

The road towards Nordradaulur is paved, so that you can easily access with any kind of car. As in the whole Faroe Islands, be aware of sheep and other animals, which may suddenly stand on the road or cross it.

Views of Nordradalur

Oyggjarvegur / Route 50 is quite elevated, so that the drive to the village, which is located close to the Atlantic Ocean, goes down a hill. There are even some serpentines downhill. You will struggle to decide whether you are rather fascinated by the waterfalls along the hill or the panorama of the valley leading towards the sea. The hills around add a lot to the scenic experience as well. After the downhill section, you either take a left bend towards the village. As Nordradalur just have some 15 inhabitants, you likely rather disturb the people there. It is definitely also worth heading straight on and view the picturesque views along the coast. Please note that some road and paths you see on Google Maps are in fact private property, so that you should not use them.

Due to the coastline and the proximity to the capital, the area is also very popular for hiking. There are some signs which explain the routes. In the countryside setting around Nordradalur, there is quite a bit of farming. You will very likely run into Faroese sheep, but also other animals if you take this brief road trip.
