Torshavn – Old Town and Tinganes (Pictured Story)

It’s about a month until I am back t the Faroe Islands. This time, I am traveling quite a lot around the islands – really look forward to that and hopefully meet some nice people there. I still have quite some material from my previous visit. One of them is this Pictured Storiy, which is taking you to the Old Town of the capital Torshavn – or Reyn, how it is typically called. This district also hosts the governmental district of the Faroe Islands, the Tinganes. Enjoy the trip with me!

Torshavn Old Town – Location & Traffic

Torshavn Old Town is a very central place in Torshavn. It is located on a small peninsula in the capital city, close to the ferry harbor. Please note that the area is in fact a residential and governmental area, not an open air museum. People are living there, so that you should not take pictures of inside the houses or step onto their property. Using drones is banned in the area as well.

Reyn is located right next to the ferry harbor, which also has a very decent public parking lot. There are also parking lots in the Old Town, but as the streets are narrow and the locals need parking as well, I strongly suggest not to use them. The closest bus station is the one of the ferry terminal, Farstodin, served by bus line 6 only. The majority of buses stop at Steinatun as well, from where it is a short walk to the South. Right outside the Old Town of Torshavn, you also find cafes and restaurants as well as some hotels.

Views of Torshavn Old Town & Tinganes

You already see the typical architecture of the small district from the parking lot. The black houses have originally been sealed with tar. The majority of the red buildings form the governmental district. Already when you take the first steps into the district, you fall in love with the tiny alley and traditional, grass-topped houses. The area also hosts the consulate of Iceland at Reyngata, by the way. The German honorary consulate is at the West shore of the peninsula. Majorly the Nordic countries have diplomatic representations throughout the city.

The governmental district Tinganes is located on the Southern tip of the peninsula. I guess that the pictures speak for themselves, all necessary ministries and governmental functions are located there. Nonetheless, you can walk through the area and also enjoy the view to the two adjacent bays and of the Atlantic Ocean. Depending on how deep you want to dig into the area, it may take you up to an hour to explore the whole area. If you are in a hurry, you can also do it in some 30 minutes – but you may be less fascinated by all the love and small things which may be worth exploring.
