A rather new artist, a debut album – these are factors, which always appeal me doing a music review. The English band / artist Family Stereo shares its first record The Thread on 31st July 2026. Here is my review.

 

Family Stereo – About The Artists

Family stereo is an indie-folk band from London. In fact it is a solo project by the British artist Blake Watt. The artist, who is in his mid-20’s, comes from a very music-driven family. His parents are Tracey Thorn and Ben Watt, who are better known as the pop duo Everything but the Girl. Blake Watt started as a drummer, but then more developed towards a singer-songwirter. His debut EP was the 2023 Take Care, which had a rather successful single release, Matter. In 2024, he released the EP Sometimes the Morning Is Different.

 

Family Stereo – The Thread – Track by Track

The eleven track album lasts 45 minutes.

1. Remedy

Remedy has been my first contact with Blake Watt and his Family Stereo. The first impression was: gentle. The melody of the opener flows like a slowly running creek through a beautiful park in fall. Gentle, unagitated. The focus is on the lyrics, but – nonetheless – the instruments spread a beautiful harmony. The lyrics also give it a thoughtful, sensitive touch. A heartwarming, beautiful track.

2. Waiting On Nina

Waiting on Nina has been one of the single releases before the album. The song has a very different style from the beginning. The drums play a soft and slow rhythm, here and there, there are howling guitars. Again, the song is driven by the lyrics. Watt beautifully describes how he met Nina, the protagonist of song. And darling You know I lived inside before we met, but you didn’t know me then. Family Stereo presents another lovely song of the album.

3. Sea Change

The style of The Thread continues with Sea Change. At the beginning of the song, Watt states Bring me your mirror, I’ll see See who I could be all my capacities. This is just an example, how beautiful he is transforming his feelings into music. The instruments are doing just what is needed to increase the atmosphere. Some rhythm, a few synth sounds and a strumming acoustic guitar. That’s it, that’s enough – and it works out so nicely.

4. Fault Lines

The album feels deep and honest. One of its best ones in that regard is Fault Lines. Fanily Stereo share a song about struggle, about lies. The core part of the song is its chorus, which feels very present. Love it.

5. The Thread

There’s a space between us I’ve never seen
Will it hold our bodies like formaldehyde
And the animal that sleeps forever
I know it’s late, but I don’t wanna wait
I wanna be with you
I tried to fight it
But days like that can take a long time
To come around again

The fifth song of the record is its title track. Again, the song is rather melancholic. It is a slow, rather quiet song. The more, you listen to the lyrics. Towards its end, multiple voice layers and an orchestral-alike arrangement on the melodic side increase the magic of the song.

6. Removed

You appeared in the remnants of my night
But I woke too soon
You were gone like a flash of white
Did I get so close
I don’t want to feel removed

The desire for love and being loved is a key topic of the record. This is what Removed is about. I don’t want to be removed is the key phrase of the song. And you feel the struggle and heartbreak Watts is exploring in this situation. With 5:14 minutes, the song is also the longest of the record.

7. Collapsing

After Removed, the title Collapsing does not suggest too positive feelings as well. While the song indeed has a rather dark touch overall, there are brighter and easier moments at the beginning. Nonetheless, it is a rather deep one . The ending of the song has a more positive conclusion, though.

8. DLR

There are likely not too many songs titled after the London light rail. The DLR / Docklands Light Railway does not play a major role in this song, though. The more, Watts is thinking about a relationship, things they did togehter. The single release nicely closesl with I think I can be someone That we both believe in. And you do keep your fingers crossed for that.

9. Silhouette On The Hill

Family Stereo addresses Silhouette on the Hill directly to his mother. He describes decisions he took with We made our way across the badlands. Stating slowly as most The Thread songs, there is a rather loud and rocking finale. That’s the way songwriters say sorry and thanks to their parents.

10. Three Moon Trail

The musical trip to the Three Moon Trail is another very deep listen. To me, it almost feels depressing. A three minutes song, which is a really intense one.

11. Tunnels

Tunnels starts with Nothing good will come from seeing things this way. While the song starts slow, it does have peaks like the chorus. Furthermore, it later comes with stronger Americana vibes. A really nice one.

Family Stereo – The Thread – My View

Wow! The Thread is really intense. However, that also means that Blake Watt and his Family Stereo does excellent songwriting. The songs are deep, but well told. The focus is on the storytelling. If you allow the British artist that he is sharing his narrations, you will have a catching, maybe a bit of saddening time. I really like the album.
