Flyctory.com Pros

  • Very fair price
  • Good location to city and airport
  • Nice Gym and pool

Flyctory.com Cons

  • Too limited attitude in service
  • Quite long routes to walk through the hotel

After one night in Homestead, I had three additional nights at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Green Tree during my December 2019 trip to Pittsburgh. The location, also to the airport, was not too bad and gave me a good transfer position for the stuff I was planning to do in my favorite ice hockey place.

DoubleTree Pittsburgh Green Tree – Location

Green Tree is one of the Southern suburbian areas of Pittsburgh. The hotel itself is located at a hill, the area features a couple of sports facilities. You should definitely have a car when you opt for this place – parking lots are available more than sufficiently.

The hotel consists of several “towers”. My room was located in the upper area, the reception did not suggest me to park uphill behind the building (see picture above) instead of in the reception area. It was quite a walk from the hotel room to breakfast.

DoubleTree Pittsburgh Green Tree – Rooms

One argument why I went for this hotel was the amazing price – a three night prepaid stay was 288 USD incuding tax. I received a room on a Hilton Honors floor, the room itself was within expectations. I definitely had more space in the Hampton Inn at Homestead I spent the nights before, though.

Especially the bathroom was rather compact and just featured a shower, not a bathtub. Overall, this still lead to a still a reasonable value for money.

DoubleTree Pittsburgh Green Tree – Breakfast / Food

The breakfast buffet was complimentary due to my Hilton Honors status. The experience was mixed. The quality of the food was really good. The freshly done omelettes were awesome and the buffet even featured items like smoked salmon. On the downside, the level of service differed significantly between the days and the overall selection was a bit limited – not the hotel breakfast you like to have during a week-long conference or similar stays.

In parallel to the restaurant, the hotel also offered a nice self service bistro as well as a sports bar. The sports bar has a very nice atmosphere and was also very popular among the hotel guests during my stay.

DoubleTree Pittsburgh Green Tree – Services

The welcoming at check-in was not too fortunate. I did not feel welcome, even though this was my first night with a confirmed Hilton Honors Diamond status. Not just that I did not get any directions (e.g. to the most practical parking lot and when/where breakfast is served), I neither had free water nor the DoubleTree Cookies, which are somehow a signature item for the brand and give me a smile every time I am checking in in that chain.

Housekeeping was also not that precise. Cleaning was definitely okay, but also not more. A tiny little thing can make me smile – the hotel did not give me any reason for that regarding room service.  The WiFi was goo, though, and when I stated at check-out that I feel that the staff is not happy to work for this outlet of the Hilton brand, at least they made me feel that there are interested. There was no excuse or try to compensate me.

The hotel offers a really nice and large gym. The swimming pool is right next door. It is likely great in summer, when you can swim from inside to outside and vice versa. In winter, of course, the outdoor pool was empty and close.

DoubleTree Pittsburgh Green Tree – My View

DoubleTree Pittsburgh Green Tree has such a nice location, very competitive pricing – but I feel that it is not worth it. During my feedback chat after check-out at the reception, the receptionist suggested that my critics sound like the staff does not “go the extra mile for the customer”. The more I thought about that English saying, the more I felt that the right wording is that too many staff members are trying to find shortcuts in their work whenever possible. Overall, the hotel was a nice stay for the two hockey matches at PPG Paints Arena, but my total rating of the hotel can at most be average.
