After seven years, the band Dream Evil is back with a new album. On 26th July 2024, they released Metal Gods. I had the opportunity of having a listen to the songs. Here is my review.

Dream Evil – About The Artists

Dream Evil are a heavy metal and power metal band from Sweden. They have been founded in 1999 in Gothenburg. Since then, they have been releasing six albums, the latest being Six in 2017. Their releases regular make brief appearances in the charts in their domestic market, but also in other countries like Germany and Switzerland. Niklas Isfeld is the singer of the band. The other members of the quintet are Fredrik Nordström, Markus Fristed (both guitars), Peter Stalfors (bass) and Sören Fardvik (drums).

Dream Evil – Metal Gods – Track by Track

The ten track album lasts 36 minutes.

1. Metal Gods

The album kicks off with the title track. In fact, Metal Gods are also the first two words Dream Evil are shouting at the beginning of song. The song is praising the big names of the genre. Nonetheless, the song also has a very personal touch. Based on powerful guitar riffs and a great melody, Metal Gods is a really strong and opener.

2. Chosen Force

After this metal firework, the first tunes of Chosen Force feel surprisingly gentle. Just a bit of guitar power is in there, the keys define the first 50 seconds. However, after that intro, we are back into the rougher rock. With the chorus latest, Dream Evil present another catching track. Thus, when Niklas Isfeld is stating we are the chosen force, you somehow tend to believe in that.

3. The Tyrant Dies At Dawn

After the band kicked off Metal Gods with the two singles released so far, the remaining songs are of course even more interesting. The chorus is very melodic and catching again. The tyrant will be dead – I really enjoyed listening to this four minute song, which also has a wonderful potential to shout-a-long with the band when they are on stage.

4. Lightning Strikes

The following 04:22 minutes are taken by Lightning Strikes. The verses feel a bit too familiar already, but the pre-chorus and the chorus are making me smile. You never know where lightning strikes, so beware, we’re coming after you – this song rather feels that you should come after Dream Evil and go for their 2024 album.

5. Fight In The Night

Fight in the Night comes with fast guitar riffs from the very beginning. Try to catch me if you can, I’m immortal, you’re a man is the first message of song. There is a lot of metal power in this song by the Swedish band – and it is fun listening to their stories.

6. Masters Of Arms

Despite Masters Of Arms is slowing down the pace of the album a bit again, the song is another catch. The strumming guitars march steadily through the song and suck you into this one. Dream Evil also presents a nice guitar solo in this one. Even though the sixth track is not as crisp as other songs of the album, I absolutely enjoy it.

7. Born In Hell

The title of the seventh track already suggests that this one is likely not a rock ballad. Of course, the band is presenting a song just in line with that. Especially the chorus, in which the band shouts Born in Hell multiple times, is spreading some darkness and fear. Don’t play this one to your kids as a lullaby.

8. Insane

The slower and tamer song is allowing to focus a bit more on the story of the song and to Isfeld on the microphone. The duet-alike in the chorus, in which the band is alternating with its lead singer, leads to a very special touch. Another song definitely worth listening.

9. Night Stalker

With Night Stalker, the album is getting very forceful again. Despite that, the chorus with a nice melody line (but dark lyrics) stays in your mind as a rather fine element. Unfortunately I feel that the 4:37 minute song does not keep the high level it has at the beginning until the very end.

10. Y.A.N.A.

The four minute track Y.A.N.A. (which means You Are Nothing At All) is closing the album. The slowest song on the album comes with a very intense atmosphere. Despite the speed, this song is definitively not a ballad, but a very deep, fascinating listen.

Dream Evil – Metal Gods – Track by Track

Yes, there are some slightly weaker spots on Metal Gods. Nonetheless, I highly appreciate the nice, fluent, easy style of Dream Evil and their 2024 album. To me, this is one of the best metal albums I listened to this weak. Versatile, entertaining, easy to consume. Tack sa mycket!
