ETV PiranHHas Hamburg – Blau-Weiß Schenefeld 3-5 (0-2, 2-1, 1-2)

Derby day in Hamburg: after ETV Hamburg’s second team had faced TV Eiche Horn Bremen in the match before, their first team now faced Blau-Weiß Schenefeld. Schenefeld is a suburb of Hamburg in the Schleswig-Holstein state and just a short bus ride away from the metropolis. So far, the team, which had just promoted from 2nd Bundesliga, played a very good season. The second match on 10th November 2024 definitely felt being promising.

ETV Hamburg – Schenefeld – Match Report

417 spectators – this Hamburg city battle came with an amazing crowd and great atmosphere, pushing both teams to a very energetic performance. Marius Schwartz started the match with a bang. He had a precise snipe after just 54 seconds, following Schenefeld’s very first free hit of the game. This pushed the underdog, who felt like absolutely wanting to go for the upset at Sporthalle Hoheluft, even more. The ball and rink kids were the hidden heroes of the beginning of the match. A very physical, but mostly not rough match required quite a lot of rink adjustments in that time. The first bench penalty of the game was for a technical foul, though, when Leon Adelmann was too close to a Schenefeld free hit and was sent off for a minor after some seven minutes. The faith of the blue-white dressed guests felt to turn a bit when they could not convert the power play and faced a short handed situation thereafter. Jan-Ole Villwock had to take the seat next to the match secretary in the 11th minutes.

However, he did have a very enjoyable time there. First, Hamburg lost the ball in the 12th minute and Schwartz converted the fast break for a short-handed goal. Still with in numerical advantage, a long throw-out by Schenefeld’s goalie Jonah Koop caused another fast break, which Hamburg could only stop with a foul. There was no doubt about the penalty shot decision- but also Hamburg’s goalie Nicolas Flathmann left no doubt against the shot attempt by Schwartz. Schenefeld felt more straight in their attacks in that part of the match, but there were no more goals. The first period ended equially short-handed, as in the last minutes, both teams faced a bench penalty each.

Hamburg Closes Up in the Second Period

It was not Hamburg’s luckiest match so far – and the bad luck felt to continue in the second period. Just after 23 minutes, Schenefeld’s nice left wing attack was initially blocked by Koop, but after the save the ball hit the foot of defender Paul Dall, whose own goal lead to an intermediate 0-3 score. Hamburg raised the pressure, but Schenefeld played solid in defense. Right after 30 minutes, the guests played an attack over the left wing and Hamburg’s Birger Dethlesen tripped Schenefeld’s top scorer right in front of the goal. Another penalty shot – the same outcome. This time Schenefeld sent Justus Karnath to the middle spot – and Flathmann saved his second penalty shot of the game.

This gave confidence to Hamburg, who finally managed to score their first goal some one minute later. Philipp Wilbrand was not defended well and took profit of his good position. Towards the end of the period, Schenefeld’s Timo Rother faced another bench penalty – but while his team’s box stood well, Hamburg closed up in the 39th minutes well-deserved, after the had some good opportunities before. A flat shot by Friedo Bohls gave Hamburg a more comfortable position for the third period.

A Dramatic Third Period

The atmosphere on that afternoon was overwhelming, the match was dramatic and both teams were backed up by excellent goal tenders. The last 40 minutes felt to have everything to becoming memorable. This was even more the case when Schwartz was sent off after 45 minutes and Dethletfsen tied the score after just 22 seconds of power play. The favorite PiranHHas felt more active now, but they faced a very smart-playing opponent, who gave their hearts in their neighbor city. Hamburg could not take profit of another power-play in the middle of the period (Thiele, obstruction, 53rd).

The two defensive lines and the goalies felt so strong that the spectators were starting to prepare mentally for an overtime. However, Villwock killed these thoughts with some two minutes left on the clock. It was another fast break which must have felt like a stab in the heart for the PiranHHas fans. Their team tried to push for the tie, also pulled Flathmann, but finally Thiele sealed the victory with an empty-net goal 86 seconds before the final siren.

ETV Hamburg – Schenefeld – My View of the Match

That’s how a local derby should be alike. Even if you are an ETV fan, you must say that this was an amazing and dramatic local floorball battle between two very different teams. Hamburg put so much force and energy on the smarter playing guests. Finally, the players of the match on both sides were the goalies, who showed some great saves. You also have to mention the audience. I felt the atmosphere was even better than in the Bonn vs. Holzbüttgen match I had featured the weekend before. Wow, that was a great match – and Schenefeld partied with their support deservedly after this stunning battle.
