It’s Only A Love Song – that’s quite a statement in the title of C Duncan. On 24th January 2025, the British artist is releasing his fifth studio album overall. I had the opportunity to listen to the record beforehand.
C Duncan – About The Artist
Christopher Duncan is an indie-pop composer and musician from Scotland. He was born on 29th July 1989 in Glasgow. His familiar background is rather in classical music, so that he initially learned to play the piano and viola. Later, he added the guitar, the bass and drumming. In 2015, he released his debut album Architect, which peaked 52nd in the Scottish charts. His most successful album release has likely been The Midnight Sun, released in 2016. Thereafter, there have been two albums, Health and Alluvium.
C Duncan – It’s Only A Love Song – Track by Track
The eleven track album lasts 39 minutes.
1. It’s Only A Love Song
The album starts with its title track, introduced by a piano melody at the beginning. With the inception of the vocals, the song also becomes wider on the instrumental side. C Duncan introduces a hymnic style, driven by strings, drums and others. The song feels a bit plushy, but also has a nice presence.
2. Lucky Today
The style of Lucky Today reminds of the opener C Duncan is going for a rather nostalgic sound in these songs. The melodic side of the second track feels jazzy and comes with a nice flow. This also spreads a lot of harmony, which nicely correlates to the lyrics – I’m lucky, so lucky. You cannot deny that this also leads to some kitsch.
3. Triste Clair De Lune
The third song is a bit slower and has an even stronger hymnic touch. This even makes it feel a bit like a chanson with a classical music touch. The balance of the wide instrumentation and the fine vocals is very enjoyable.
4. Worry
The piano is much more in focus of this song, even though it is more or less tootling the same short theme most of the time. The song uses a lot of echo which makes it feel like a choir singing in an empty cathedral. A very impressing listen.
5. The Space Between Us
It’s Only A Love Song continues with a similar style. The Space Between Us deals with loss, with letting go. Overall, it is very melancholic, still showing the same intense atmosphere like the song before.
6. Think About It
Think About It, which has been one of the feature singles of the album, comes with a very different style. The song is much quicker and more rhythmic. Is there something like progressive pop, similar to the rock genre? The song feels like that. After the slower and by that also heavier listens before, this one spreads some ease.
7. Delirium
The title of the seventh track already suggests that it likely does not connect to the ease of the song before. Nonetheless, Delirium is not that heavy and sad and comes with a nicely flowing melody. The song has a nice flavor of folk music.
8. Sadness
With Sadness, C Duncan’s record reverts back to a heavier and melancholic sound. Again, the song impresses with its orchestral instrumentation, which feels especially wide and almost symphonic in some parts.
9. Surface Of A Fantasy
Already the first tunes of Surface Of A Fantasy remind of the easier sound of Think About It. The song is jazzy and stays with the fine melodic flow. A bit of a faster lounge music style, which has an uplifting character.
10. Reprise
The Reprise is rather an interlude track, just lasting 73 second. It takes up the title of the opener and the album It’s only a love song, before the record is closing with the final track.
11. Time And Again
Time And Time Again closes the record with a five minute epic. The song could easily work for a Hollywood blockbuster – at least if we were a couple of decades ago. The majestic sound feels like the perfect finale of the album.

C Duncan – It’s Only A Love Song – My View
It’s Only A Love Song does feel a bit out of time. But that also turns it into a special listen in 2025. C Duncan did an album with amazing instrumentation and intense listens. Of course, if you finally enjoy listening to it, is a matter of taste, but one cannot deny that it is a well done publication.
