  • Very personal storytelling
  • Nice, characteristic style

Heartbreak Hotel is already the third EP by the GermanDutch artist Luna Morgenstern. After I shared my thoughts about her debut one with you already, I felt to put her on focus again with this one. Release date of the six song set has been 24th January 2025.

Luna Morgenstern – About The Artist

Luna Morgenstern was born on 1992 in Cologne, Germany. Her mother is German and her father i French. She moved to the Netherlands to study in Enschede and is nowadays based in Amsterdam. This boosted her career in the Dutch market especially. In 2021, Morgenstern released her debut EP Taking the Blow. Two years later, she added a second EP, Dance Dance (Don’t Go). Over these years, she also increased her fan base in Germany and the United Kingdom.

Luna Morgenstern – Heartbreak Hotel – Track by Track

The six track EP lasts 18 minutes.

1. Hush Hush

The opener Hush Hush opens with atmospheric sounds, which remind me of Japanese music. Finally, the song turns into a modern pop track with some dream-pop alike elements. A nice listen at the beginning of the EP.

2. Heartbreak Hotel

Footsteps in the corridor
Silenced by a velvety oor
In a vacuum
I don’t have many belongings
Backpack with my longings
Leave them all at the door
Room number seven

The first previously unreleased song is the EP’s title track, Heartbreak Hotel. The song starts slow and atmospheric, using a lot of electric elements. The chorus is rather simple, but the verses work out very nicely and add the necessary depth and personal touch.

3. Miss u

Miss u is the third song of the album. The water flowing in the background sounds add a very interesting feature to this one. Again, the chorus is rather driving the catch, while the stanzas turn the song to an interesting, personal experience. Nice songwriting.

4. Spiral

Spiral describes a personal struggle about accepting and loving yourself. It starts with Luna Morgenstern standing in a club, looking at all the dressed and made up girls. The song is driven by electronic sounds again, leading to a song, which is catching you and makes you move to the rhythm, but also comes with very thoughtful passages. I really like that.

Right on the edge now
I might be tripping
Crystals and meltdowns
Keeping me dripping
Some crushed ice with energy
Might just be the end of me
Over the edge now
Look at me spiral

5. Somebody Else

An unhappy relationship is making Morgenstern being somewhere downtown in the arms of someone else. The song reminds of some of the newer Taylor Swift writes. However, especially in the second part of the 2:28 minute listen, there is a stronger focus on the rhythmic elements. Nice one.

6. Free/Fall

The almost three minute Free/Fall is concluding the Heartbreak Hotel EP. The song is rather slow and majorly focuses on Luna’s vocals. This leads to an intimate, but also very fragile touch of this song. The fade-out with some spoken words feels to be the perfect ending of these six songs.

Luna Morgenstern – Heartbreak Hotel – My View

Luna Morgenstern is defining her own style of music. Thereby, the six tracks of the Heartbreak Hotel song collection feel fascinating, not boring. I really like her style. A good EP.
