For my October 2021 trip to Iceland, I went for a car rental provider which I had used before for trips to the Nordic island: Blue Car Rental is operating an office right in the car rental park at Keflavik Airport (KEF) as well as in the city of Reykjavik. I had a rental from Keflavik with them. Here is my experience.
Blue Car Keflavik (KEF) – The Rental
For my stay in Iceland, I had a three day rental with an “old-fashioned” Dacia Duster. Due to the unclear weather situation, I felt that was a good option when I booked the car some weeks before the in-fact rental in October 2021. Due to the late receiving and returning of the car, I went for a full coverage insurance package, which also significantly eased the rental and return. The three day rental from Friday early morning to Sunday late evening was 32,573 ISK, roughly 220 Euro. The rate was pre-paid, but was subject to refund in case of cancellation.
Blue Car Keflavik (KEF) – Location & Office
Blue Car Rental’s office is located in the car rental park not too far from the airport terminal. As it is next to the Aurora Hotel, it is actually one of the closest walks between the terminal and the office locations possible (apart from Hertz and Avis, who operate offices in the terminal building). Thus, I would only recommend to go for the bus shuttle in very adverse weather.
Blue Car Keflavik (KEF) – Receiving The Car
Due to the zero liability coverage and as I checked in online before, receiving the car right after midnight was super-efficient. It definitely took me longer to find the car on their parking lot (because I was too dumb, it was actually parked right at the door) than to do all the paperwork. The staff was very friendly and we had a nice chat.
Blue Car Keflavik (KEF) – Returning The Car
Returning the car was the same procedure: we had a really nice chat, but the in-fact returning of the car was really efficient. Of course, it took a few minutes to check the car, but it was really fast, so that I could head to the airport very quickly. Like at the receiving of the car, I received most paperwork by e-mail, which went very quick and has been really efficient.
The Car – Dacia Duster 4WD
The Dacia was a great choice this time again – not as I was heading to highland roads (they are closed at these times anyway…), but due to sudden snowfall during my trip. The padded tires did an excellent job during winter conditions. Apart from that, I loved that the car was equipped with a basic GPS navigation device. The mileage of the car was advanced, but it came in good condition. The key of the car also had a rebate chip for an Iceland petrol station franchise.
Blue Car Keflavik (KEF) – My View
Renting with Blue Car Rental was a real treat. Yes, one part of the experience was having a zero deductible insurance, but overall, the services have been really good, the car was in good condition and there were no issues around the rental. Easy way to rate this a Top Pick!.
