Hverir Geothermal Area (Pictured Story)

Hverir is one of the most popular geothermal areas in Northern Iceland. Two the key drivers is obviously that it is part of an amazing landscape – and located right at the Ring Road 1. Thus, it is really accessible for anyone. Here is my Pictured Story with major sized pictures about this beautiful area, which is regarded to be one of the most beautiful geothermal locations on the island.

Hverir – Location & Transport

Hverir is located in Northern Iceland, between Akureyri and Egilsstadir. The closest city is Reykjahlid, which is offering all kinds of touristic services (shop, petrol station, restaurant and hotel). You might visit the area majorly due to the Lake Myvatn and the adjacent natural geothermal pool, which is a real beauty. You can’t miss Hverir on your road trip – it is located right at the Ring Road #1 and the smell of the geothermal activities is undeniable. Hverir has a large parking lot, which may however be surprisingly crowded in summer time. There are no opening times or entrance fees for that park.

Views from Hverir

One of the key features of Hverir is its versatility. You have mud pot as well as hot water spots. And you can walk around most of the area. The colorful area with the picturesque Namafjall mountain in the background is a real beauty. It is worth to walk along the area and explore very different spots. The large mud pots were the most impressive ones for me, but I was also impressed by the small hills which give you a light touch of a volcano feeling. You should at least take half an hour time to explore Hverir itself – it is definitely a a nice alternative to take more time and explore the area around this spot as well.
