View Over Akureyri from Hlidarfljall

If you follow Flyctory.com for a while, you know that I love the Northern Icelandic city of Akureyri. This posting takes you to the Hlíðarfjall mountain. While the place is very popular in winter for skiing, it offers some nice views over the town in summer. In contrast to my late summer 2021 visit, there have been summer opening times of the lifts, so that you could, for example, do moutain biking. Hope you enjoy being distracted by the tiny, little Pictured Story:

Hlidarfjall – How to get there

The highest elevation of the mountain is some 1,200 meters. It is located West of the city of Akureyri, the road 837, which is leading to the lift and sporting faciltiies, is fully paved. The drive from Akureyri is some ten minutes. You need a rental car to go up to the former resort. Taking the short drive as such is already a nice experience.

Views of and from Hlidarfjall

The lower station of the skiing area featured a hotel in earlier days. It is, however, closed nowdays. The area features huge parking lot. Typically, you are not alone up Hlidarfjall and some other tourists might enjoy the view in parallel.

The reason why I feel that the detour is worth it are of course the beautiful impressions you get from Akureyri and the fjord. Hope you like them as well:
