The German book Der Struwwelpeter (“The Shock-Headed Peter”) is one of the most classic and traditional German children’s books. It has been written and illustrated by Heinrich Hoffmann. He was not only a children book writer, but also a lyricist and a psychiatrist. Hoffmann was born in Frankfurt on 13th June 1809 in Frankfurt and died there on 20th September 1894. Thus, it is not that surprising that the city hosts a museum about the book and the life of the author. I this review, I take you to the Struwwelpeter Museum Frankfurt.

Struwwelpeter Museum – Location & Admission

The Struwwelpeter Museum is located in the heart of the historic part of Frankfurt. It is close to the famous Römerberg square. The easiest way to get there is by underground train. Lines U4 and U5 are connecting to Dom/Römer. From there, it is just a few steps to the museum. The closest S-Bahn commuter rail station is Frankfurt Hauptwache.

The museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday, 11:00 to 18:00. There may be group tours before the opening time already. At the time of writing, adult admission was 8 EUR. The museum is included in the Museumsufercard, which allows to visit multiple museums in Frankfurt.

Struwwelpeter Museum – The Visit

The museum was founded in 1977. It initially opened as Heinrich-Hoffmann- und Struwwelpeter-Museum at another location. It is located at its current location in 2019. The exhibition is in German and English, so that also foreign tourists can visit it. It spreads over multiple level of the building. The design and presentation is very modern and even won prices for the concept. Furthermore, it is an inclusive organization, in which handicapped people are working as well. The first level of the exhibition is majorly about the Struwwelpeter character. You learn about how the character has been developed, many side stories, and also how it became successful in non-German speaking countries as well. You also learn about the life and work of Heinrich Hoffmann, including his non-literature part of professional life. These parts of the exhibition have been – by far – the best part of the museum to me.

The upper level also features temporary exhibition. They are typically in the children’s literature and general culture-historic topics. During my visit in 2023, the museum focused on the political and social influence of the Struwwelpeter in that part. Throughout the museum, there are also quite some interactive exhibits, so that you can also visit the place with your family. The museum is also very suitable for younger visitors.

Struwwelpeter Museum – Services

At the reception on street level, there is also a really neat souvenir store. The staff was very friendly. There are also special events like lectures. The museum drives a dedicated space for that.

Struwwelpeter Museum – My View

Especially the main exhibition of the Struwwelpeter Museum is absolutely worth a visit. It offers a very interesting insight about the book and its author. There are not too many museums of that kind, which makes it more valuable. The temporary exhibition during my visit did not strike that much to me, though.
