During my University time, I quite much enjoyed driving around with my RC (radio controlled) scale model car. Even though I don’t follow that hobby any more, I was quite amazed when I learned about Speed Control in Bielefeld. The RC scale model car race track allows to hang out and battle with others – with a special twist. Here is my review of my recent visit in the city in East Westphalia in Germany.

Speed Control Bielefeld – Location & Admission
Speed Control is driven by an RC car shop, Speed Control Parts. It is located in a former industrial building (could be a car garage or similar) in Sennestadt, a Southern borough of Bielefeld in Germany. The building is located in a commercial area. The regional train station Bielefeld Sennestadt is just a short walk away, so that you can get there by public transport. There is also a bus stop in front of the station (lines 46 and 47). You can of course also go there by car. There are a couple of parking lots right in front of the building. It is rather close to two motorways (A2 and A33). However, as there is no exit nearby, it is a few kilometers away from one of the surrounding exits.
The RC race track is open from Wednesday to Sunday, 11:30 to 20:00. A 12 minute session on the on-track or off-track course (see below) is 15 EUR each. A 15 minute session on the drift track is 12 Euro. If you bring your own car, you can also use the drift course (10 Euro day pass) or the crawler area (see below, 10 EUR day pass). Speed Control also offers traditional sim racing (30 EUR, 30 minutes). I went for a day pass, which does include unlimited on-road and off-road driving (but not the other attractions) for 50 EUR. When I bought the ticket, I have been told that there may be longer waiting times due to a high number of sales, but I had some ten sessions within some 3.5 hours and felt that the situation is relaxed. Of course, people with fixed bookings may have priority over a day pass at your visit.

Speed Control Bielefeld – The Main Tracks
When you enter the main area, the two main tracks are striking. Most of the space is taken by the on-road course, which allows “traditional” racing. The off-road track feels slightly smaller. It is located in the corner of the hall. On the left hand side from the entrance, there is the drift track. There are strictly no own cars on the two main tracks, the on-road and off-road tracks.

On-Road Track
The on-road track is a rather long course, which is is driven in clockwise direction. It offers a nice variety of challenges, from narrow hairpins to fast curves. There is also a tunnel and an uphill/downhill section with narrow 90 degrees curves. The cars are well maintained and are typical street cars. At first sight, they might feel a bit of slow – you won’t exceed a speed of 15 km/h / 10 mph on the course. The course is also rather wide. Fast lap times are around 29 seconds.

The challenge and the special feature of Speed Control is the way you steer the car. All cars have a transponder for time taking and a forward facing camera in the middle of the windscreen. You sit in a gaming cockpit, just like you might know it from your home video game racing equipment. Any of the five cockpit position comes with a large screen. You may accelerate, brake, steer or reverse – there are no other options to adjust the behavior of the car. The screen also shows your approximate speed, throttle and break position and lap times. The system behind that is called VBR (Virtual But Real) Playground and is offered by an Austrian company which offers that as a franchise. At my time of visit in May 2026, Speed Racing in Bielefeld is the only place offering it.

That system is rather smart. The low speed avoids major accidents and makes Speed Racing also suitable for children of a certain age. The camera perspective, though, leads to a unique experience. The drive feels much faster and the track more narrow than it is actually. After a while, you get a really good feeling for the car and how to drive fast.
Off-Road Track
The off-road tracks comes with different kinds of surfaces (even some really slow ones), bumpy tracks, and even ramps. The cars are larger and are more truck-alike, coming with a higher position and stronger suspension. The top speed here is faster, about 25 km/h. Unfortunately, during my visit, the cars did not have transponders, so that you did not have lap times. Roughly, a lap on the off-road track is about 30 seconds as well, though.

Apart from that, the controls are absolutely equivalent. But especially if you drive with others, you don’t miss the time thing and the track is a lot of fun.

Speed Control Bielefeld – Other Tracks & Attractions
As said, there are two other tracks. I loved watching the crawler track, where you can move your own RC scale model car, though difficult terrain and narrow road and bridges. There is neither a fixed route nor any kind of timing. The aim is to challenge your dexterity and coordination. During my visit, the drift track was popular and a couple of people showed some nice stunts on the more slippery ground wich looks a bit like two eights joined. If you like video game racing, the race simulator might be a fun option for you as well. I concentrated on the scale models, though.

Speed Control Bielefeld – Services
During my visit, the people at Speed Control were lovely. They helped you and were very spontaneous, if you asked them for a race session. The hall also offers a food truck with cold and warm snacks and a selection of drinks. The staff there was very friendly and helpful as well. As said, Speed Control in Bielefeld is driven by a RC racing shop, which also has a small show room with limited items for sale. They also sell t-shirts of the venue as well as their own designed Be Nerdy shirts. Finally, there is also a small show room with “real” cars, which is also used to do recordings for the company’s YouTube videos.

Speed Control Bielefeld – My View
I was absolutely curious about Speed Control Bielefeld – and finally I absolutely loved it. There are two key drivers for that: the racing experience is unique and you simply love to chase others – or your fastest lap. The perspective and special kind of control is simply amazing and feels much more appealing to me than driving a full-speed RC car or a race track with a “traditional” radio control.
The other key factor why I loved the visit are the people. The staff is amazingly friendly. Even when cars need to be charged or serviced, they try to assist you as quickly as possible. The food truck is a really nice feature as well. This all leads to a relaxed atmosphere. I will definitely come back one day and try being faster at my second visit. The day pass feels expansive at first sight, but I feel it was absolutely worth the money. If you visit at busier days, you might have a bit of waiting time before your next session, though.
