  • Very intense, atmospheric songs
  • Lovely lyrical parts

I spend so much time trying to get perfect shots for everyone else – this is how Sam Evian describes his thoughts about doing solo music after being successful in songwriting. Plunge is already the fourth solo album of the US-American artist. He has released it on 22nd March 2024.

Sam Evian – About The Artist

Sam Griffin Owens, who is acting as Sam Evian, is an indie-rock singer-songwriter and producer, who is originally from New York City. He is also collaborating with bands like Big Thief or Blonde Redhead. Apart from these collaborations, he also started doing solo releases in 2016. His debut album is the 2016 Premium. Thereafter, he released two more albums, You, Forever (2018) and Time to Melt (2021).

Sam Evian – Plunge – Track by Track

The nine song album lasts 34 minutes.

1. Wild Days

Wild Days is more than the opener for Plunge. The song is setting the album into a certain direction. Guitar-driven indie-rock with a rough, but also rather personal touch. The sound is very individual, but not in a negative sense. Wild Days comes with a very own character.

2. Jacket

From the very first moment, the second song Jacket shows a very nice, fine groove. A touch of typical American vibes – but nonetheless, the song also presents the same ingredients as the openers. For example, the somehow rough guitars, which are still not having a gentle touch. Or the nice narration style of the artist., which leads to a very enoyable three minute listen.

No Matter where you’ve gone,
It’s never too late, dear,
To say that you’re the only one.
Every day and night feels so wrong,
But nothing else matters, dear,
You know how time keeps rolling on.

3. Rollin’ In

Two songs of Plunge have been released before the album publication – Rollin’ In is one of them. With quite some reverb and rather slow drumming, the song has a very dreaming and fairy-alike atmosphere. The story of this song is a lovely combination of a ride along the shore and thinking about why life has progressed so far already. With the decent, but rather wide instrumentation – for example, the song is having a lovely sax solo – Rollin’ In definitely feels special.

4. Why Does It Take So Long

A few smashing chords right at the beginning of the song tell you: this one is gonna be more rocking again. After rather atmospheric songs, Why Does It Take So Long feels surprisingly easy. The song stays in your mind from the first moment. Nonetheless, the song is not cheap. It just has a nice indie-rock catch.

And tell me why,
Why does it take so long to feel?
Tell me why.

5. Freakz

High guitar notes, scattered bass groove and synth/keyboard melodies – Freakz presents a very different sound again. Especially at the beginning of the song, you rather feel like listening to an indie-pop track. Later, the guitars take more and more control and some parts even come with a psychedelic touch. The constant part of the listen is clearly the bass, which is grooving steadily..

6. Wind Blows

So long, my dear.
So long, the rodeo.
None of us know which way the wind blows.
Goodbye for now.
Goodbye, my only home.
Tip of the cap, follow the rainbow.

Sixth song, another very different style right at the beginning of the track. The rhythm guitar is strumming like in a good, old country track. Nonetheless, when Sam Evian starts the vocals latest, you take off the hard hat again and enjoy the fine indie-rock melody, which is creating a really nice atmosphere. Really nice listen.

7. Runaway

The rather slow style of Wind Blows continues in the next song, Runaway. The lyrics sheet for this song is again rather short, but is is just enough to create another lovely listen. The second half of the song is more focusing on the instruments, which some ooh-oohs here and there. Especially the piano play is really nice and virtuous. Another really good song,

8. Another Way

With 2:44 minutes, Another Way is the shortest listen on Plunge. The song is coming with a stronger guitar presence again – and the lovely and emotionalizing lyrics which made other parts of the album special already. There is also some desperate touch in the message of the song.

Why does it feel so fast?
I want a life to last.
I want to be with you.
I want to be your fool.
Baby, tell me there’s another way.

9. Stay

Howling and strumming guitar sounds give a touch of Americana genres in the closing song Stay again. In the chorus, Evian closes with I want you to stay here, by my side. The song has a bit of a nostalgic touch, but is also very emotional. And it stays in your mind – by that, it feels like a perfect finale for Plunge.

Sam Evian – Plunge – My View

Sam Evian presents nine really nice stories, which have individual characters, but still feel to have a strong bend. Especially the nice leverage of instrumental and lyric elements leads to a lovely balance. Plunge is a really nice, but also very special listen. Nice one!
