  • Very well told traditional style country music songs
  • Versatile album
  • Clear style and character

In January 2023, I reviewed Margo Price’s album Strays. In my 29th August 2025 reviews, I come back to the 2018 Grammy nominated artist. Hard Headed Woman is her fifth studio album overall. Here is my review.

Margo Price – About The Artist

Margo Rae Price was born on 15th April 1983 in Aledo, Illinois. The US-American country and Americana artist grew up there and later studied dance and theater in DeKalb, Illinois. Moving to Nashville thereafter, it took a several other jobs before making it bigger in the music industry. She released her debut album Midwest Farmer’s Daughter at the age of 32. The album went Top 10 in the US Country Charts, but topped the British ones. The following album, All American Made (2017), had about the same success in both countries.

Margo Price – Hard Headed Woman – Track by Track

The twelve track album lasts 40 minutes.

1. Prelude (Hard Headed Woman)

The album starts with a 52 seconds prelude. Majorly Margo’s voice and some fiddle leads to a rather spiritual beginning.

2. Don’t Let The Bastards Get You Down

After the slow intro of the album, there are traditional country vibes and snappy, rhythmic track. The message of the song is clear – it feels a bit worrying to be that bullying and hate becomes more and more a topic in music.

Don’t let the bastards get you down
Don’t let ‘em sell your heart and steal you blind
Make sure there’s no next time around
Don’t let the bastards get you down

3. Red Eye Flight

The speed feels to increase for Red Eye Flight. However, the sound of the third song of the album is rather close to the predecessor and especially a treat for traditional country music listeners. Thereby, Margo Price and her rhythmic style does not lead to an old-fashioned listen, but catchers other lovers of the genre as well.

4. Don’t Wake Me Up (feat. Jesse Welles)

The second already released song on Hard Headed Women is Don’t Wake Me Up. The rhythmic style stays, the song slows don’t and comes with a darker atmosphere, especially in the stanzas. The chorus is more uplifting. And it states And sooner or later we’ll all be dead I’d rather be living it up, up in my head. The Arkansas artist Jesse Welles adds a nice flavor to the song.

5. Close To You

I walked out on my job, I drove across the Delta
I had to be close to you
Rolled the windows down, singin to Lucinda
I had to be close to you
I didn’t wanna hear what my mama would say
I didn’t care if I was pissin my money away
All I knew I had to be close to you

The starting lyrics of the song already tell you: this one is getting emotional. And, indeed, Margo Price, presents a lovely country music ballad. It does not need too much to impress with music – if you do it right. Price does very right here.

6. Nowhere Is Where

Nowhere Is Where keeps Hard Headed Woman on the emotional side. This one feels very fine and fragile. The mood is rather on the melancholic and desperate. She wants to get out of that nowhere – and during these 3:32 minutes, you deeply feel with her.

On your way down won’t you pick me up?
If there’s room enough and you got gas in the truck
If you’re going nowhere I could use a ride
Point the headlights south and drive

7. Losing Streak

The seventh song of the album is Losing Streak, another feature single. The electronic guitars, which open with a fine melody already tell that for the time being the quiet and slower songs are done. Margo Price sounds comparably modern in here. However, she maintains her musical signature. The chorus is a beauty and creates a lovely listen.

8. I Just Don’t Give A Damn

I Just Don’t Give A Damn starts bassy and groovy. The song is again about hate, not supporting Margo on her way – or how she states at the beginning of the chorus, I done everything I can to make you happy, but every word I spoke you always put me down. The result of that is clear when you look at the title. Here and there, there are spots of anger in this very nicely arranged song.

9. Keep a Picture

I keep a picture, baby, since I can’t have you – sometimes that’s all you can do. And that’s what the ninth song of the album is about. The song is slower and less rocking than the songs before, which leads to a very personal, direct style. Again, Margo Price impresses with a beautiful leverage of the story and the musical arrangement. That’s excellent songwriting.

10. Love Me Like You Used To Do (feat. Ty Childers)

Kentucky country artist is joining Margo Price for Love Me Like You Used To Do. In his first vocal set, he states Well, life ain’t always roses, let’s forget all our woe-ses. Another love story which is not out of trouble. However, there is a positive outlook. And I believe in us, honey, most of the time, they sing together in the chorus. An awesome country ballad.

11. Wild At Heart

The swaying Wild At Heart rips you out of the romantic feelings you had from listening to the song before. The song is not loud, but it does have a catching style. It makes you move to its Southern rhythm with the chorus latest.

12. Kissing You Goodbye

At the final song, Price is Kissing You Goodbye. The electric guitars play a major role again and create a relatively rocking farewell from Hard Headed Woman. Apart from the prelude, this song is the shortest of the album – Margo Price feels to prefer shorter bye-byes.

Margo Price – Hard Headed Woman – Spotify

I will add the Spotify widget once the album has been released.

Margo Price – Hard Headed Woman – My View

Hard Headed Woman is one of the best traditional style country music albums I listened to this year. It does not feel outdated and it is based on a clear musical signature. Margo Price does her music just right – and that’s a lot of fun to listen. A really good album!

Favorite Song: Love Me Like You Used To Do
