TSV Bayer Leverkusen – BSV Sachsen Zwickau 26-25 (12-13)

At the end of the Women Handball Bundesliga season 2024/25, I made it to Ostermann Arena in Leverkusen again. As unfortunately expected, the Werkselfen, the team of TSV Bayer Leverkusen, battled in the play-downs against the relegation to 2nd Bundesliga. The first match in the best-of-three series, Leverkusen had already lost on the road against BSV Sachsen Zwickau. On 14th May 2025, the Rheinland hosts had the opportunity to tie the series and force a deciding match in Saxony.

TSV Bayer Leverkusen – BSV Sachsen Zwickau – Match Report

The match in front of 203 spectators started with the players waiting for the referees and a moment of silence for Bayer’s former staff member Hans-Josef Vogt. Both teams struggled in offense, having quite some turnovers. On the goalkeepers’s side, it was finally Barbara Viktoria Gyori, who helped the guests to turn trailing by two goals after roughly ten minutes into a two goal lead. Leverkusen had quite some momentum at the beginning of the match, but the guests were in control in the middle of the first half. Despite Bayer never got back the lead in the first half, the scoring difference never left a major gap between the two contestants. There were several moments in this match in which Bayer felt superior – but they simply could not keep the momentum for a longer time interval. Thus, Zwickau kept the deserved lead until the buzzer, with a score of 12-13 at the intermission.

A Handball Thriller In Leverkusen

The hosts tied the score quickly in the second half. However, the story of the game felt to continue. For example, Zwickau gained back a two goal lead in the 37th minute, profiting from two blocked penalty throws i a row by their opponents. Nonetheless, Bayer scored four consecutive goals soon thereafter and were back in the lead (18-16, 44th min). Gyori, who was that strong before, was now replaced by Jovana Kadovic. While during the season so far, Leverkusen did struggle in mental and physical strength, especially towards the end of some tight matches, they did much better now. Even though Sachsen Zwickau put them under pressure again and again, they stayed strong this time. From the 44th minute until the end of the match, the left hand side goal count on the board was always higher than the one on the right.

The match was really close. Despite the continuous lead, Bayer never managed to increase the gap to three goals or more – until the 58th minute. When Annika Ingenpaß converted at that time, the score was 26-23 with 2:36 minutes left to play. Now both teams had a mental battle. It felt like Zwickau could come back. Again, they closed up the score to one goal. Leverkusen had to somehow play down the last 55 seconds of the second period to force a third match in Zwickau. Instead, they had a silly turnover and Zwickau had quite some time to at least go into overtime. However, the hosts worked very well in defense and sealed the victory for their team.

TSV Bayer Leverkusen – BSV Sachsen Zwickau – My View of the Match

Congrats to TSV Bayer Leverkusen. First of all, this close match was their first win in the Bundesliga season so far at all. But you should also cheer the Rheinland team for keeping their spirit and concentration up high. The relegation to 2nd Bundesliga would now be decided in a third and last match in Saxony. The more Bayer will be able to keep that spirit and experience in their heart, the more they will give Zwickau for that Bundesliga spot in the 2025-26 season.
