SSF Dragons Bonn II – Lilienthaler Wölfe 4-7 (1-1, 3-4, 0-2)

After I already featured the Dresden vs. Weißenfels match at the first match day of the German Floorball Bundesliga, 22nd September 2024 brought me back to the German leagues. One division below in the 2nd Bundesliga North/West, SSF Dragons Bonn’s second team hosted the Lilienthaler Wölfe (“Wolves”), who won both of their opening matches on the road so far. I expected an interesting match at that Sunday afternoon at Sportpark Nord.

The guests had the better start of the match. The Wölfe had the more dangerous attacks in a match, which generally showed quite some turnovers on both sides. Bonn’s goalkeeper Mats Wendtland, though, showed an excellent first period. This was also a reason, why his team finally even took the lead. After almost nine minutes, Renars Capars succeeded in a fast break situation. Even though the goal gave Bonn a certain push, Lilienthal felt to be the stronger team, but also struggled with their offensive conversion.

The hosts had some dangerous attacks, especially in the second half of the first period. There was no score, though, for a while. Just when the Bonn fans already felt to take the first break at Sportpark Nord as the game leader, Lilienthal tied the score. With 30 seconds left on the match clock, they converted a free hit in central position, which should likely have lead to Bonn’s first bench penalty. The tied score after 20 minutes felt definitely more deserved than a Bonn lead in the first intermission.

 

Four Goals in the First Four Minutes of the 2nd Period

While both teams acted well in defense, the first minutes of the second period was a treat for offensive floorball lovers. Anika Weißkirchen, one of two Bonn female players, passed the Ball to Juri Spitz, who scored after 73 second. However, less than a handful of passes after the face-off, Malte Simon Wedde tied the score again. The 22nd minute was the most eventful of the match. The loud Bonn fans could cheer again, when Boran Jäger profited from a blocked pass behind the Lilienthal goal and gave the Dragons their third lead of the match. Even though the match was nervous overall, Lilienthal’s routine felt important against the recently promoted hosts. Just two minutes after Jäger’s goal, Tom Bacher profited from some Bonn defense positioning issues and tied the score.

After these thrilling four minutes, the pace of the match slowed down a bit. However, there were some hectic situations in the game. The referees felt to loose control of it more and more. This was, however, not the reason that Lilienthal added two more goals in that period. Fabian Diaz de Armas scored both of them, in the 33rd and 35th minute. Especially the first one felt a bit unlucky from an SSF Bonn perspective. His second goal, however, was a lovely run – he felt unstoppable for the opponent’s defense in that situation. Bonn was pushed back now and just had few opportunities. Thus, it was a bit of surprising that they managed to get on the scoreboard again. Caspars scored his second goal of the match with 16 seconds to go.

 

Interesting Fight and Referee Trouble in the Final Period

The late second period goal did seem to give Bonn additional faith. Nonetheless, Lilienthal was still strong in defense and could also rely on netminder Milan Alexander Urumovic, who played the second half of the match. After there were a couple of unpunished fouls and close-to-limit physical situations before, the referees felt to be reminded of bench penalties in the final minutes of the play. Just when Bonn felt to find better plays against the guest’s defense, the umpires sent Levin Leyhe to the sin bin in the 54th minute. The decision for incorrect push felt rather questionable, though. Routined Diaz de Armas converted in power-play from the right wing (55th), so that a Bonn comeback felt less realistic.

The final minutes of the match became rather dramatic. In the 57th minute, Wedde had to take the first two minutes absence (incorrect hit). This was definitely a foul, but the hit did not feel that hard. On top of that, there was a much clearer hit from behind against one of the Lilienthal forwards on the left wing. Bonn even pulled Wendtland in power play, but their biggest chance was a fast break, which drove the home fans nuts. The Bonn forward was clearly stopped by a hit from behind. I don’t say these things too often due to my limited perspective through the lens, but the situation was a crystal clear penalty shot situation. Time was ticking down more and more, Lilienthal defended sufficiently well and finally secured the lead with an empty netter by Plenge in the final minute.

 

SSF Dragons Bonn II – Lilienthaler Wölfe – My View of the Match

You definitely saw that Bonn’s young perspective team has a lot of potential, but also needs to gain more experience in the first half of the season. The match felt overall nervous, but Lilienthal could adopt to the situation much better. Unfortunately, one thing you remember from this very interesting match will be the referees’ performance. It was definitely way below the level of the match and lacked basic positioning and splitting the rink between the neutral duo. Lilienthal had an impressive start of the 2024/25 season, winning all three of their opening away matches and thus leading the table after three match days.
