Mercure Hotel Dortmund Messe

Rating

3.9/5

Flyctory.com Pros

  • Nice location
  • Smart room design (even though a bit old-fashioned)

Flyctory.com Cons

  • No road access on soccer match days
  • Lack of power outlets
  • Some breakfast issues at first morning

As the Run & Fly Meeting 2025 in Dortmund was held in parallel to a Borussia Dortmund soccer match and that blocked the road access to the venue, I felt it is better to go for the only hotel, which is right inside the area. The Mercure Hotel Dortmund Messe (Messe meaning “Trade Fair”) is just a few step away from multiple venues. It is linked to the trade fair, maybe 200 meters away from Signal Iduna Park, close to the Westfallenhalle (concert and sports venue) – and finally right across the road from Helmut-Körnig-Halle, where the athletics meeting took place. Here is my hotel review of my two night Accor stay.

Mercure Dortmund Messe – Location

The hotel is located right in the trade fair and sports district of Dortmund. It is located between the Westfalenhalle and Trade Fair Hall 3, right South of the B1 national road and thus also very well connected to the motorway system. Signal Iduna Park, home of soccer club Borussia Dortmund is more or less across the road. There is also an ice hockey arena next to the hotel. Apart from the hotel restaurant, there are not too many touristic services around. Next to the stadium, there is one restaurant, though.

The easiest way to access the hotel is by car. The hotel offers a parking lot at 9 EUR per night. During soccer matches and other major events, the Strobelallee, which is the access road to the hotel, is closed, though. The underground station Stadion (“Stadium”) is just a short walk away and also connects to Dortmund Main Station (lines U45, U46).

Mercure Dortmund Messe – Room

I had booked a double room for two nights, Friday to Sunday, in early February 2025. The rate of the room was a non-public one. You have to be aware of that the city tax in Dortmund is extremely high (7.5 per cent). I had a room on the second of eight floors, close to the elevator. There were ongoing renovations on the floor, which did not impact my stay too much. The room had a rather traditional style, but was absolutely fit for purpose. It was not overwhelmingly large, but the layout was really sensible, so that I had no issues storing all my luggage and technical equipment. The work desk had a nice size as well, while the TV set felt really small in nowadays relations. A real pain point was the distribution of power outlets. There were two ones at the work desk and one on the floor next to the bathroom door. Especially, there were no outlets next to the bed.

The shower bathroom came with a rather traditional style, but was fit for purpose. There was sufficient space to store my toiletries. I was a bit surprised that there was no body lotion at the sink. The shower lead to a questionable impression, though. The soap basket was not properly fixed any more. I would not have used it. More strange, though, were the shampoo and shower gel dispensers. I am roughly 1.80m high and the top of the dispensers, where the amenities came out, were roughly at the height of my eyes. Apart from these issues, the bathroom was fine, though. The whole room was clean.

Mercure Dortmund Messe – Breakfast

Breakfast is served in the restaurant on ground level. I was a bit confused as the door to the restaurant was closed when I got there on the first morning. The breakfast buffet is fine and comes with some warm dishes as well. There is also a cooking station for omelettes and similar dishes. However, when I was waiting there to be served, the staff simply stared at me and ignored me (even though the ingredients were ready there). Overall, the staff was rather passive and preferred chatting with each other than serving the people. However, the second morning performance was much better. The egg dish station worked, the staff was more open minded as well.

Mercure Dortmund Messe – Service

Checking in at the Accor hotel was a bit of bumpy. The receptionist had struggle assigning a room for me and forgot to hand me my drink voucher as an Accor Gold member, even though it was on his table. The WiFi as such in the room had really good speed, but absolutely drove me mad. The key reason for that was that you had to re-login every time you connected and sometimes even during the same session. This would have been bearable, if the login process did not sometimes take several minutes. Surprisingly (regarding the location), the mobile network reception was rather poor.

A really nice part of the hotel is the gym and spa area in the basement. The gym area is really spacious and comes with some nice equipment (maybe a bit on the limited side). The Römerbad (“Roman Bath”) sauna area is very nice as well. It comes with a steam bath and sauna and a small relax area. There is no pool or similar equipment, but I feel it is really a nice spot to hang out.

Mercure Dortmund Messe – My View

I had a fine stay in the hotel. The location was excellent for my purpose. You do have to deal with the traffic issues during events, though. The gym and spa area is nice and overall, the breakfast was fine. The power supply in the room should be improved, though.
