  • Nice songwriting
  • Characteristic folk-country duet style

We Mavericks is a country-folk duo from Oceania. On 18th October 2024, they are releasing their sophomore album Heart of Silver. I had the opportunity listing into it before release and share my thoughts with you.

We Mavericks – About The Artists

We Mavericks are Lindsay Martin from Australia and Victoria Vigenser from New Zealand. Martin is a vocalist and multi-instrumentalist from Riverina in New South Wales. Vigenser is from Auckland, she has her roots in rural folk music. In 2021, the duo released their first album, Grief’s a Gardener. Thereafter, there have been no new releases since All This Noise, which opened the promotion campaign for Heart of Silver in early 2024.

We Mavericks – Heart of Silver – Track by Track

The ten track album lasts 37 minutes.

1. Heart of Silver

The album opens with its title track. The duet style, just featuring two vocalists and two guitars at the beginning, leads to a very intimate and direct atmosphere. Later, more instruments like the fiddle and some rhythmic elements join, which also creates a stronger country music vibe.

2. All this Noise

The second song of the album, All this Noise, follows a similar plot. Lindsay and Victoria go for a rather slower start with limited instrumentation, but the song develops over time. Especially in its final part, there are some quite energetic elements as well. An interesting plot with rather sudden breaks keeps this song interesting.

3. The Bed you made

The over four minute track The Bed you made. The song rather takes a comparably fluent style from the very beginning and strongly leans towards folk, even though the fiddle adds thoughts about other Americana genres. Victoria Vigenser is the significantly more present vocalist of this song. She is leading through the story of the song very nicely.

4. Carefree

After the rather folk-alike The bed you madeCarefree adds a stronger country vibe to Heart of Silver again. Thereby, We Mavericks create a very intense, sometimes a bit of mystical and intense atmosphere. The song has a nice flow and works with different instrumental and vocal layers. A really nice recording and a good pick as a single release.

5. Paper Darts

After there have been quite a few already released songs so far, Paper Darts opens a set of four previously unreleased tracks. This time, We Mavericks recorded a song, which is rather feeling like a duet, especially in the chorus. This leads to a nice presence and focus on that part of the track. Nice!

6. Ballad of a Firefly

The next song on Heart of Silver is Ballad of a Firefly. The song is very intimate and starts ballad-esque. However, the melancholic and thoughtful spirit breaks through more and more, so that later parts of the track almost exclusively feature Vigenser’s voice. The last section of this one, however, also features a more intense instrumental part.

7. Balm in Gilead

The Balm in Gilead even adds a biblical reference to Heart of Silver. The two artists work well together, on the instrumental as well as on the vocal level. These kind of songs illustrate the potential of the duo the best.

8. Wildfire

Even though the duo from Oceania again goes for a rather slow opening of Wildfire again, the song is quickly changing its character. You find elaborate melodies, stomping rhythm and an overall rather fast and present song. This turns the eighth song into a one of the most noticeable recordings on the album.

9. Hold Me

Hold Me is more or less also the list of full songs, as only The Outro is following thereafter. The over four minute listen is especially catching and present with violin sounds at the beginning. The character of this one is very dreamy  and more and more creates an harmonic and nicely flowing spirit.

10. The Outro

The Outro develops the theme define in Hold Me a bit further. The tenth track thereby creates a nice fade-out and farewell from this long-play.

I could not spot the album on Spotify – I will share it asap

We Mavericks – Heart of Silver – Track by Track

Heart of Silver is a set of fine songs and good musical collaboration. The tracks are nicely written and show a nice harmony between the two main actors. Here and there, the album could have a stronger catch. Nonetheless, I like it.
