Und was, wenn nicht (“And what if not”) is the second solo EP release by David Gramberg. However, the German artist also has quite an interesting band and project vita before his solo career. I ran into the set of five songs, which he is publishing on 22nd November 2024. Here is my review.
David Gramberg – About The Artist
David Gramberg is majorly known as the leader, singer and piano player of the Bavarian band Mary Lou. The indie-rock quartet was active from 2010 to 2020 and released one album. He later initiated the garage rock project Elephalooka. The 2018 single Autumn Comes is officially marked as a single by David Gramberg and Mary Lou, in 2021 he released his debut single Raise My Bet. His English lyrics song era lasted until 2022, when he also released the EP Where Have You Gone. In November 2023, he shared his first song in German, Ich bin die Zeit.
David Gramberg – Und was, wenn nicht – Track by Track
The five track EP lasts 17 minutes. Only the fifth track is previously unreleased.
1. Schon ok
After a slower start, the opener turns into an energetic and powerful pop track. Especially the chorus, which is using a nice wide instrumentation, including saxophone elements, is in focus of the listen. A song full of desire, in which Gramberg asks “Would it be okay if we meet each other tomorrow again”.
2. So wenig
The song is built around the sentence So wenig war mir so viel wert wie Du – “So little was worth that much to me like you”. A song full of struggle and a relationship which is not working out well. A very vulnerable story, with a nice arrangement.
3. April April
Released in late October, April April has been the most recent song release by David Gramberg. The song starts as a piano track, but then turns into a very energetic, intense listen. A really nice write by the German artist.
4. Meer
The press kit to the EP calls Meer (“Sea”) the ideal soundtrack for fall 2024. The plot is similar to other tracks on Und was, wenn nicht, with the stanzas leading towards a very present, personal and energetic chorus. Komm lass uns ein letztes mal alleine sein zu zweit – “Come on, let’s be together alone a very final time”. To me, this one is the most fascinating track on the album.
5. Wegen dir
The title of Wegen dir translates to “Because of you”. The longest track on the EP is also the only song Gramberg has not shared beforehand. The track is a beautifully flowing song full of love. Again, struggle in regards of love is the key topic. Thereby, Gramberg is working with different sounds and elements, the strings staccato in the middle and the the calm rhythm even has a bit of a jazzy touch.

I will add the Spotify widget once the EP has been released.
David Gramberg – Und was, wenn nicht – My View
David Gramberg presents an EP full of emotion with a smart indie-pop style. He is working with different sound elements, which is leading to a very relatable, but also entertaining style. The EP reaches its climax at Wegen dir, which comes with a great level of virtuosity. Bad luck that it is the only previously unreleased track on Und was, wenn nicht.
Favorite Song: Wegen dir
