  • Some tracks are too lengthy

Nowadays, I receive a lot more promos for albums and EPs than I can process. Some of the releases I receive simply attract me quickly. One of them is the latest album Love Changes Everything by the instrumental rock trio Dirty Three. Not only that it is the first release of the Australians since twelve years, the six songs on the album are simply named Love Changes Everything I to Love Changes Everything VI. Release date of this special listen has been 28th June 2024.

Dirty Three – About The Artists

Dirty Three have been formed in Melbourne in 1992. Since then, they are playing in the same lineup. Warren Ellis is playing the violin and bass guitar, Mick Turner lead and bass guitars and Jim White is the drummer of the trio. In 1993, they released their first, self-titled album. Especially in the later 1990’s, the band grew their popularity in Australia. Love Changes Everything is the ninth studio album by the band. The previous 2012 release, Toward The Low Sun, peaked 31st in the domestic charts.

Dirty Three – Love Changes Everything – Track by Track

The six song album lasts 41 minutes.

1. Love Changes Everything I

As said, the track on this album are more or less just numbered from to VI. The first two parts have been released as single already. Love Changes Everything I feels like an intro, sometimes even like a warm-up. The combination of violin, guitar and rhythm feels very unique, sometimes confusing. With 4:39 minutes, the track is comparably short, which boosts the “intro” character of it.

2. Love Changes Everything II

The second track feels like the perfect background melody for a movie to me. The song starts with a rather melancholic mood. It is driven by comparably monotonous piano chords. A very atmospheric, but also depressing listen.

3. Love Changes Everything III

I mentioned about the opening song that it is rather short. Love Changes Everything III, for example, is almost eight minutes long. Again, the piano and the violin take the lead, getting you into the sound of the song. The song has a very jazzy touch. In general, the drumming so far is rather limited and does not play that much of a role. Nonetheless, the slight presence of it does add quite a bit to the atmosphere.

4. Love Changes Everything IV

The fourth track is rather melodic. The violin takes a more present role in this take, which has a flavor of folk music. The gentleness of the recording turns it into a very pleasant listen. Nonetheless, the Australians manage to create a stunning atmosphere, an entertaining plot. This is really lovely.

5. Love Changes Everything V

The fifth part of Love Changes Everything likely comes with the most intense plot. The violin is played in a harder way, the 6:24 minute track is having a constant crescendo towards the finale. However, it is also more homogeneous and does not come that much which new themes and surprising elements.

6. Love Changes Everything VI

Love Changes Everything VI is the over ten minute finale of the album. There is a lot of virtuous play in this one, which sometimes makes me question how you especially make a violin sound like this. However, I run into the same trouble like in the track before. There are just scattered moments, in which Dirty Three presents some new sounds and new elements. The much I appreciate the high skill level of the musicians – I just have to state that this one is a bit of lengthy again. The last three to four minutes luckily are having a bit of a more versatile style, though.

Dirty Three – Love Changes Everything – My View

I feel that Dirty Three created something special with their Love Changes Everything album. There is also a lot of masterful instrumental play in it. The album is fascinating, but also lengthy. Some songs underline the potential of the band, but two, three more tracks with a new plot and therefor having a bit more of a limited scope per song would have been the wiser choice.
