After I already introduced you to the Dresden Suspension Cable Railroad (Schwebebahn), it is urgently time to share my other special public transport experience in the German city with you. The Dresden Funicular (or Dresdner Standseilbahn) is located very closely to the other transport attraction there. I had a ride on the same day in November 2023.

Dresden Funicular – Network & Tariff

The Dresden Funicular connects the boroughs Loschwitz (at River Elbe) with the upper Weißer Hirsch. The lower stations of the funicular and the cable suspension railroad are just a three minute walk apart, so that you can use the same transport to get to both spots. The bus Körnerplatz is served by the bus lines 61, 63, 84 and 521. There are also several facilities to hang out and have a drink or a snack in that area.

Apart from maintenance slots, the funicular is operating all year. It is part of the network of the Dresden Public Transport Authority. However, day tickets or the Deutschland Ticket are not accepted. Since 2023 (also in 2024), the single ride for adults is 4 Euro. The return ticket is 6 Euro. You may also take one of the two rides uphill, walk to the other station and take the other ride downhill. I did a complete run, up and down, with the funicular and the suspension railway.

The Dresden Funicular operates in the summer season between 6:30 and 21:30 (weekdays). On Saturdays and Sundays, the rides operate from 9:00. In the winter season, the last ride is at 20:30. In peak time, there is a ride every ten minutes. In other times, there is a 15 minute frequency.

Dresden Funicular – Rolling Stock

The cars of the Dresden Funicular are tilted, so that they match the slope of the mountain. The cars used nowadays are as of 1994 and also offer wider compartments to accommodate bikes, wheelchairs and buggies. The are seats (some foldable) so that you can enjoy the ride. The funicular rides may be very popular. Especially during the week, they are an important mean of transport for the locals, and the tourists storm it on the weekends.

Dresden Funicular – The Ride

The ride with the Dresden Funicular takes five minutes. During that time, the cars climb up a maximum slope of almost 30%. The height difference between Körnerplatz and Weißer Hirsch is 87 meters. The cars meet at the Gerüstviadukt at the middle or the route. At some parts, the view of Dresden is a bit of limited due to hills, houses and trees. The more, the view from Weißer Hisch is really nice. However, the Oberloschwitz view from the suspension cable railroad upper station felt nicer to me.

Dresden Funicular – Service

The staff at the stations was nice and helpful. There are no souvenir stores at one of the stations.

Dresden Funicular – My View

Even though I definitely prefer the sibling suspension cable railroad, riding the Dresden Funicular is a nice and iconic experience. It is really nice that these kinds of transport are still maintained (and they are even rather energy-efficient…). Thus, I would definitely go for both rides when you visit Dresden.
