SSF Dragons Bonn – MFBC Leipzig 3-2 (0-1, 2-0, 1-1)

Playoff time in the German Floorball Bundesliga. The women’s competition kicked off the semifinals on 28th March 2026. Hosting SSF Dragons Bonn had the first match in the best-of-three series at their home Sportpark Nord, before traveling to MFBC Leipzig the following weekend. Bonn had won the first play-off round with a small upset versus Red Devils Wernigerode and now had to play against the league leader after the regular season.

SSF Dragons Bonn – MFBC Leipzig – Match Report

While there were just a few people during the warm-up, the audience of the match was not too bad once it started. Apart from their own fan base traveling to the Rheinland region, Leipzig shocked the 130 spectators early. After just three minutes, Kua Isabel Kurki converted a cross pass from the left wing by Luisa Heuschkel, giving the favorites an early lead. However, Bonn did not feel being too shocked about it. Leipzig had more ball possession and controlled the match. The hosts, though, played very disciplined and passionate and had some good fast attacks.

Despite you could have feared that Leipzig would march on and steadily increase their lead, the match kept on like that. Especially towards the end of the period, Bonn had some pretty good chances. MFBC’s goalie Justine Werner was more in focus than you might have expected. For example, she had to block Anika Weißkirchen’s attempt, who had no defender with her in her 16th minute breakaway. Especially towards the end of the period, the home fans had quite some home that their ladies would tie the score – but Leipzig was not only patient in offense, but also disciplined in the last row of defense and thus kept the lead until the intermission.

Bonn is taking the Lead

The story of the match felt to continue the same way in the second period. Leipzig was superior in ball possession and kept pressure on the Dragons’ defense. However, there were few critical situations on Marlene Oertel’s side. Her team’s confidence increased. Finally, it was Weisskirchen who brought Bonn back into the game. In the 27th minute, she scored from a central position and tied the score. Just four minutes later, she even converted a left wing attack, giving Bonn the 2-1 lead.

Bonn definitely had the momentum now. However, they could not add another score. Nonetheless, the lead after 40 minutes kept the dream of an upset alive.

Last Minute Decision

You could expect that Leipzig’s coaches found the words in the locker room to make their ladies prevent pressure for the remaining semifinal match(es). And the game felt to be just in line with that. Kurki added her second goal of the day in the 45th minute, after her team stole a pass in Bonn’s defense. However, the teams stayed disciplined so that neither Leipzig nor Bonn could score. In the 18th minute, Bonn’s Wiesje Wischer drove the crowd mad when he tipped in the ball over the goal line from a short distance. However, the referees disallowed the goal due to entering the goalkeeper’s area. Unfortunately, I could not review the video of the match while writing the report, but my pictures and the impression at Sportpark Nord suggest that this decision was terribly wrong.

With a bit of struggle about the situation on the Dragons’ side, both teams felt to fight towards the overtime. However, just two minutes later and with 33 seconds left on the clock, Wischer nevertheless became the golden girl for the hosts. She somehow fought through the entire Leipzig defense from central position and the ball trunded into Werner’s net. Leipzig brought their best players and had Svenja Klingner ready for the extra attacker, but Bonn even survived this final pressure, winning the first semifinal in their home rink with 3-2.

SSF Dragons Bonn – MFBC Leipzig – My View of the Match

Thanks to both teams! Both, Bonn and Leipzig played a remarkably patient and disciplined match. Indeed, this women floorball semifinal was a very strategic and tactical battle. But it absolutely had its thrill and ended with a memorable victory for Bonn, who put the maximum possible pressure on the favorites, who have never been beaten after 60 minutes in the regular season. Bonn protected their goal against Germany’s best offensive team and managed to beat the league’s best defense thrice. Even though MFBC might struggle a bit with the loss, they should be proud being part of one of the most interesting women league matches I have ever seen on German soil.
