DJK Holzbüttgen – SC Potsdam 13-6 (4-1, 1-2, 8-3)

Just the day after I featured the SSF Dragons Bonn vs. SC DHfK Leipzig match the day before, I had another coverage of the German Floorball Bundesliga. North of Cologne, the DJK Holzbüttgen hosted another recently promoted team, SC Potsdam. With a victory at the Stadtparkhalle in Kaarst, the hosts were able to take the lead in the league table. Here is my 26th October 2025 match report.

DJK Holzbüttgen – SC Potsdam – Match Report

The match started with a slight delay, due to a rather quaint reason. After both teams were presented, ready for the face-off, it was obvious that both teams aimed to play in almost exactly the same colors. Potsdam came back from the locker room in red and there were some smiles on everyone’s faces. The smiles fades on the guest side quickly, though, as Holzbüttgen almost felt to roll over them in the first minutes. Joona Heiskanen scored the lead from central position after 90 seconds, Jarno Pensikkala added the second goal in the 4th minute. When Erik Brosius had to stop an attack by the hosts with an incorrect hit, Holzbüttgen converted in power-play by Heiskanen. After six minutes, Holzbüttgen already lead by three goals.

Just when Potsdam felt to slightly recover from that sportive shock, they went short-handed again after an incorrect substitution. Leo Häfner took advantage of that situation just 13 seconds thereafter (13th), giving his team a comfortable 4-0 lead. The young boy, running up and down after every home team goal with a huge Holzbüttgen flag had a busy day on that Sunday. However, Potsdam did feel to be dangerous here and there in offense. In the 16th minute, Henry Mettovaara scored for Potsdam for the first time, profiting from a precise pass by Janne Makkonen.

Potsdam wins the second Period

Even though you could spot some defensive struggle on both side, the match was fast, attractive and had a lot of physical action. On the sports side, it felt to be a perfect day for the hosts – and that felt to continue, when Lutz Belcke scored for the hosts from the slot in the 27th minute.

Potsdam felt have be significantly improved in this period. The Holzbüttgen defense acted very disciplined in that part of the match, so that it took a while until there was another goal. Jasu Lind broke the curse on his teams office in the 38th minute, converting after a right wing attack. With Potsdam’s third goal in the final minute of the period, there was some hope for a close battle in the remaining game. Jere Hiironen took the rebound after Jan Saurbier blocked a shot by Makkonen.

Many Goals in the Third Period

The Holzbüttgen lead was just two goals up during the intermission. After 66 seconds in the third period, Pensikkala felt that this was too close, adding the sixth goal for the hosts. Tim Westenberger’s goal in the 48th minute almost felt like a decider. However, Potsdam never felt to give up and also had some individually really strong players. One of those is definitely Mettovaara, who gave his teams hope, scoring after a left wing attack in the 51st minute.

Ten minutes were left on the clock. Instead of Potsdam closing up again, it was Holzbüttgen now, though, who took match control. In the 52nd minute, Pensikkala had another goal. Two minutes later, Conrad Lehwalder scored the goal leading to a 9-4 intermediate score. Potsdam did not give up and maybe also took the chance to have some special practice. They pulled the goalie, which lead to two goals within 25 seconds. Especially the tenth goal for Holzbüttgen was remarkable, as Saurbier’s throw-out initiated Nils Hofferbert’s attack (58th), so that the goalie received an assist. There was hardly any time to breathe now. Three more goals were scored in the last two minutes. Finally, the match ended 13-6.

DJK Holzbüttgen – SC Potsdam – My View of the Match

With many goals and a lack of defense, the fast match was likely not always a treat for coaches and floorball strategy junkies. However, the fast pace, the dynamic approach and also the very good refereeing lead to a very attractive match at Holzbüttgen’s home ground. On top of that, the organization in front of almost 350 spectators has been excellent, so that the Rheinland club feels exemplary for hosting Floorball Bundesliga matches in an excellent manner.

With the victory, DJK Holzbüttgen took over the lead in the table. As a promoted team, SC Potsdam does not need to blame themselves too much for losing this one. However, due to the extremely close level in the league, they need to focus on gaining points, especially on their key peers in the battle against relegation. Being the second best offense after that matchday does lead to to some optimism. They need to work on their defense, though, as it is statistically the weakest in the German Bundesliga.
