Midland (29th August 2025, Hamburg)

The weekend right after the Sound of Nashviille Open Air 2025 in Cologne featured another really interesting concert by the German country music series. On their only German stage of their European Tour 2025, the Texas country band Midland visited Hamburg. For their show at the Docks, they were supported by Colby Acuff and Jonathan Terrell. After their Saturday Evening Main Stage appearance at the C2C 2025 n Berlin, this has already been the second time that year I featured the band. Here is my review of the 29th August 2025 show in Northern Germany.

Docks – About The Venue

The Docks is one of the many clubs at the Reeperbahn, the key entertainment and red light district of Hamburg. Several other venues and also the Millerntor Stadion, home of Soccer Bundesliga Club FC St. Pauli, is in close proximity. The venue comes with a capacity of 1,500. As it is quite in the middle between the St. Pauli underground station (line U3) and the Reeperbahn S-Bahn commuter rail station (S1, S2, S3, and S5), it is quite easy to get thee via public transport. Alternatively, there are also a couple of bus connections. However, at that concert, the connections were slightly impacted by the Hamburg soccer city derby as well as a major open air concert.

 

Midland – About The Artists

I have featured Midland multiple times already. There are for example three album reviews on Flyctory.com, namely The Last Resort: Greetings From (2022), The Sonic Ranch (2021) and Let It Roll (2019). The band around Mark Wystrach has been founded in 2014 in Dripping Springs, Texas, and became huge with their 2017 debut single Drinkin’ Problem. They do rather traditional style country music, combined with rock elements and good – sometimes hilarious – storytelling.

So far, Colby Acuff just had appearances in my Country Music Playlists. The 1996-born is originally from Idaho. Despite he kicked off his professional career in 2020, he has already released five studio albums (excluding a deluxe edition of his 2023 Western White Pines) since then. In 2023, Acuff debuted in the Grand Ole Opry.

The opening act of the day was Jonathan Terrell. He is an alt-country and rock artist from Texas. He already released an album in 2008, Trials and Stimulation. His most recent major studio release is the seven track Roughs (2024).

 

Midland- The Show

Jonathan Terrell had a surprisingly early time slot and kicked off his 27 minute set at 18:25. He presented a nice range of songs, including These Days and Highway. Towards the middle of the set, Hamburg felt more and more warmed up. They cheered to the songs presented, including the cover of Robyn’s Dancing On My Own. Hamburg felt to be happy with that opener.

It took just some ten minutes for Colby Acuff to be on stage at 19:00. This was a surprisingly quick set change, especially as there was a second surprise to me – a played a some 30 minutes full band set! The performance of Acuff and his bandmates was very energetic and playful. Songs like If I Were The Devil or When I See You Again showed very different styles, but were both appreciated by the German crowds.

 

Midland play a Good 90 Minute Set

Comparably early for a main act, Midland entered the stage at 20:02. With Mr Lonely and Burn Out, they played two of their big songs rather at the beginning of their set. The seventh song I Wish You Would was maybe the most hilarious moment of the concert. Midland recorded this song originally with Mackenzie Carpenter – but as she was obviously not in Hamburg, keyboarder Jeff Adamczyk took over her vocal part wth a slightly pushed falsetto voice. After the Brooks & Dunn cover Boot Scootin’ Boogie, there was a short break.

In the long “encore”, the US-Americans presented their biggest hit Drinkin’ Problem – and Hamburg joined in. The lovely finally of a roughly 90 minutes set was the Tom Petty classic Mary Jane’s Last Dance.

Midland – My View

I felt it was a really nice evening in Hamburg. Colby Acuff was the “winner” of the evening to me, I would have loved him to play some additional 15 minutes. Midland filled the Docks and did a typical Midland show – good music, good sound, a lot of fun. Unfortunately, the light was not too good during the times I was able to take pictures – but these guys are always welcome once they are back in good, old Europe.
