Flyctory.com Cons

  • Exposed to traffic

I really like flying to or from Munich Airport (MUC) or having a transfer there (at least in Lufthansa’s Terminal 2…). However, there is one thing you just cannot deny about the travel hub. Its rather distant location from the city and the quite average public transport options (they never built the Transrapid maglev…) are quite a bit of a pain. From Central Munich to the airport, a S-Bahn commuter rail ride with some delays may easily take longer than an hour. However, there is an option with a shorter – at least nominal – travel time. The Lufthansa Express Bus connects Munich Main Station with Munich Airport (MUC). In July 2025, I checked out this one on a business trip.

Lufthansa Express Bus – Network and Tariff

Lufthansa Express Bus features three stations at the airport and two in the city. At Munich Airport (MUC), tehre are stops at Terminal 2, Terminal 1D and the Munich Airport Center. If you come from the airport, the first stop is Schwabing/Nordfriedhof, which is rather popular as it features a nice public transport connection. The other stop is at Arnulfstrasse on the Southern side of Munich Main Station. You cannot transfer between the airport stations or the city stations. Buses run every twenty minutes, from 5:15 to 19:55 (airport-bound) and from 5:33 to 20:13 (city-bound). This also means that the service might not work out for you if you have a very early departure or a very late arrival.

The expected travel time is 45 minutes. However, a bus is naturally exposed to the Munich city traffic. The bus does alter its routing (not the stops) in case that feels favorable. At the time of writing the one way ticket for Lufthansa Express Bus (adults) is 12 EUR, if you pre-buy it online. The walk-in price at the driver is 13 EUR. The return is 19.30 / 20.50 EUR. You can also buy packages of ten ride. A really nice and not that well documented fact is that the bus also accepts the Deutschland Ticket.

Lufthansa Express Bus – The Buses

Lufthansa does not in fact own the buses. The Lufthansa Express Bus service is driven by Autobus Oberbayern, a regional coach company. The buses differ slightly, but have roughly a capacity of 50 seats. The bus I had on the inbound to the airport had a luggage rack inside the bus for smaller luggage.

On the outbound, trolleys had to be loaded into the trunk. The driver was very helpful. The bus is by the way regarded to be a coach service and not a regional bus. It also uses the motorway (at least, depending on the traffic). Thus, it is mandatory to buckle up during the ride. The buses don’t have toilets on board.

Riding the Lufthansa Express Bus

During both trips, the outbound on a Tuesday morning and and inbound on a Thursday afternoon, were very comfortable. There were just some eight to ten passengers on Tuesday. Thursday has been significantly better booked, but you still easily had a row of seats on your own. The bus does provide WiFi. However, I had some issues connecting to it and finally used my cell phone. The table I used on both trips, rather in the back of the bus, does not have the same smooth experience like a train does. Thus, working on Flyctory.com pictures was bothersome to difficult, while writing blog reviews felt very easy and handy to me. Of course, the bus is exposed to traffic, so that the effective travel time on each route was about one hour.

Lufthansa Express Bus – My View

I used the Lufthansa Express Bus during rush hour times. Thus, I did not explore one of the advantages of it – that it is in fact even slightly faster than the commuter rail. However, I preferred it a lot. One key factor is that you can board the bus right at the terminal. The main one, though is simply that it is much more relaxed that the rail option and that you can even make use of your travel time. The drivers were nice and the service was good. The nominal price feels a bit aggressive, but still fine. With the Deutschland Ticket, though, I would always favor the bus over the S-Bahn, if my destination in the city suits to one of the two stops in the city.
