Just the evening after the Visions of Atlantis show in Essen, I headed to the E-Werk in Cologne. On 29th September 2024, the concert venue hosted two really fine acts, of the Southern rock scene, Blackberry Smoke and Bones Owens. Here is my concert review of Blackberry Smoke’s Be Right Here Tour stop in my home town.

E-Werk – About The Venue
The E-Werk at the Schanzenstraße in Northeast Cologne is the more traditional, but smaller sister venue of the Palladium. The two major venues are just across the street from each other. I would highly recommend to avoid going there by car, the situation can be very tricky, especially in case of parallel shows in both places. If there are no seats in the E-Werk, it can hold up to 2,000 people. The area is a former industrial zones and also hosts the Carlswerk Victoria venue and some services like Wellnest Cologne.
Blackberry Smoke – About The Artist
Blackberry Smoke are a country rock and Southern rock band from Atlanta, Georgia. They have been founded in 2000. The band has already released eight studio albums. I reviewed their two most recent ones, the 2021 You Hear Georgia and Be Right Here (2024). The band has a major fan base, even outside North America.
The original announcement of the concert named The Steel Woods as the support act, but in fact Bones Owens stepped on the E-Werk stage. The Nashville-based artist is releasing music since about a decade. His music is an Americana-inspired mixture of roots and alternative rock sounds. I reviewed two of his albums, the 2021 Bones Owens and his most recent release, Love Out Of Lemons (July 2024). The latter received an Top Pick! award.
Blackberry Smoke – The Show
Right in time at 20:00, Bones Owens took the stage in Cologne. Accompanied by a bassist and a drummer, he played a powerful eleven song, 45 minute set. From the very first songs like Get It On or Lightning Strike, he performed a firework of energetic rock songs. Some of the people in the packed and almost sold out E-Werk could sign-a-long with the artist and his band. However, he caught the masses easily and made them rock and follow the groove of the songs. His set concluded with Rambler and Bout Time.
A Two Hour Firework with Blackberry Smoke
After a some 25 minute intermission, Blackberry Smoke kicked off their set. The Cologne show was the third last of their 2024 European tour. The first songs of their set were Fire in the Hole and Good One Comin’ On, However, the show started with a small accident, when frontman Charlie Starr ripped off the transmitter cable of his guitar in the first song’s intro. The setlist was in line with most of the shows before. There were some surprises, like Medicate My Mind, which was not on the list at all other shows. In songs like Pretty Little Lie and Waiting for the Thunder, the Rheinland region proofed being quite word-perfect and sang-a-long with the sextet.
While most of the set showed powerful Southern rock, partially with a touch of blues, there were also some more quiet moments like the eleventh track, Azalea. The audience had a long evening at the Cologne venue. The band played a long set, which lasted some two hours. The encore consisted of Don’t Mind If I Do, Willin’ (originally by Little Feat) and the chucker-out Ain’t Much Left of Me. After that, the E-Werk fare-welled the band on their last stop in Germany.

Blackberry Smoke – My View
The E-Werk hosted a great set of music. Bones Owens did already a great set, before Blackberry Smoke took control of the German visitors. Three hours of Southern rock music gave a memorable time. I was especially impressed by the large audience in the major venue. A really good one!
