The Old Market Hall (Vanha Kauppahalli or – in Swedish – Helsingfors Gamla Saluhall) is one of the most iconic buildings in the Helsinki. Due to its very central location, it is a must visit for many tourists to the city. I take you inside in one of my Pictured Stories.
Helsinki Old Market Hall – Location & Admission
The Old Market Hall is located right at Market Square (Kauppatori) and its ferry stops. From there, you can start your trip to the beautiful island of Suomenlinna, but also take cruises around the Finnish capital. Our Helsinki Sightseeing Cruise with Royal Line started from here. You are really in the heart of the city, other sights like Helsinki Cathedral or SkyWheel Helsinki are just a short walk away. The Kauppatori tram stop is served by line 2, there are several other connections around as well, though.
As it is a shopping and relaxation place, there is no admission to the Helsinki Old Market Hall. It is opening Monday to Saturday 8:00 to 18:00. There is also a Sunday opening from 10:00 to 17:00 – but I guess that some of the stores might be closed at that time.
A Walk Through Helsinki Old Market Hall
Vanha Kauppahalli has become a very touristic destination. Still, it is coming with a nice atmosphere with different booths selling goods next to each other. Especially in peak times, the place may be rather packed and thus a bit of uncomfortable, though. Apart from selling grocery and other food, there are also some cafes and small restaurants, which give you the opportunity to have a drink or enjoy a small bite.
The range of food is lovely. You can also buy some rather Scandinavian stuff like elk meat or salmon with different flavoring. However, as you see in the first picture, the food offered is definitely not limited to local tastes. The prices are rather high, but that’s not too uncharacteristic for Finland. Having visited Helsinki Old Market Hall is definitely something you should put on your bucket list.
