TV and radio tower are becoming touristic attractions in many cities nowadays. Their height typically offer a great view over the city or the region they are covering. The same applies for the Donauturm (“DanubeTower”), which is one of the most iconic buildings in Vienna. The 1964 opened tower lifts you some 50 minutes over the Austrian capital. During a visit in June 2024, I had the opportunity to visit the iconic structure. Here is my review.

Donauturm Vienna – Location & Admission

The Donauturm is located in the Northwest of the iconic Donaupark (“Danube Park”), which is a more than 600,000 square meter large park in Vienna. The park is located on a major island in the Danube River and thus Northeast of the city center. The easiest way to get there is taking the bus 20A, which is stopping at Donauturm and connects to the U1 underground at Kaisermühlen stop. There is also a major car park in front of the tower. A very iconic way to get around in the Donaupark is using the small touristic rail Donauparkbahn (“Danube Park Rail”), which is offering trips around the park and has a station near the tower.

The Danube Tower is opening daily from 10:00 to 22:00 hrs. In the summer months, times are 9:30 to 22:30. The last trip up is 45 minutes before closing, the last one down 15 minutes before closing. You can pre-book the ticket online, which may make sense for very crowded days. However, there is no time slot. Adult admission is 18 Euro. If you want to use the slide on top of the tower, this is an additional 5 EUR fee. There are also combined tickets with other Vienna attractions, like the famous Wiener Riesenrad (“Vienna Ferris Wheel”).

Donauturm Vienna – The Visit

The Donauturm has three observation deck levels. An operated elevator takes you to the main observation deck at a height of 150 meters. The main deck is an open, spherical round terrace, which is secured by a cage-alike structure. On top of that, there is the enclosed upper deck. There are signs and interactive screens which introduce you to the sights in and around Vienna on top of the tower. From the upper to the lower level, you can either use a staircase or the elevator.

Views from Donauturm Vienna

The location of the Donauturm is a bit of away from the city. The linear distance between the tower and the Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral), for example, is about 4.5km. The distance to Schönbrunn Palace is even roughly 10km. This also means that the view over Vienna’s most iconic sites is not ideal. Nonetheless, you got a nice view, majorly of the river, the surrounding buildings. You can also spot the Prater with the Ferris wheel quite well, as the view is not obstructed. A nice feature of the view from the tower are the hills and mountains around the Austrian capital.

Donauturm Vienna – Services

A nice add-on to your visit is using the slide, which is doing the 15 meters height distance from the upper to the lower observation level (for a fee, see above). The majority of the upper ceiling of the slide is transparent so that you can also enjoy the view during that ride. There is a brewery style restaurant on ground level. In the tower itself, there is a rotating cafe and a restaurant (which has more limited opening times, reservations are suggested). Of course, there is also a gift shop next to the entrance, which is overall a very nice one. The staff was friendly and helpful during my visit. Also on top of the tower, the signs and directions are clearly given and also include information about how many steps you have to take to reach a certain level. You can leave your bags at lockers at the entrance, which I would generally recommend. If you are not having a drink or a bite on top, your visit should be around 30 to 40 minutes.

Donauturm Vienna – My View

Unfortunately, the Donauturm is a bit of remote. One the one hand, this adds a bit of travel time there (roughly 30 minutes from Stephansdom underground station). On the other hand, it also limits the view of the city center. Thus, you should combine it with a visit of the nearby attractions like the Donauparkbahn or a relaxing walk through the park. The view is still nice, especially on a clear, sunny day. Generally, it is a nice spot, though.
