From time to time, I simply enjoy having a night in Cologne, between two office days close to the office. So I did at the end of August 2024. As I needed some H-Rewards nights for my Deutsche Hospitality customer account, I chose one of their options on that night and went to the Steigenberger Hotel Cologne. The hotel is regarded being very comfortable, but maybe also a bit of outdated. Let’s have a look how my thoughts about the stay are.

Steigenberger Hotel Cologne – Location

Steigenberger Hotel Cologne comes with an excellent location. It is right at the Rudolfplatz, from where several tram and underground lines depart. There are multiple restaurants around and some attractions. The walking distance to the main shopping area is some 15 minutes. The area is vibrant, the sound insulation of the room was at most average. You heard a lot in the room. At the Rudolfplatz, there are also grocery shopping options.

The most convenient way to the hotel is by public transport. There is a direct connection (tram line 1, typically every 10 minutes), which directly connects to the Deutz / Trade Fair high speed rail station. You need to transfer once (multiple options) to reach Cologne Main Station, though. Driving distance by taxi is some five to ten minutes. The hotel offers a parking garage, which is 28 EUR per day at the time of writing (no in/out). Despite this private one has a capacity of some 400 spots, it may be very busy on peak times, also due to people enjoying the city.

Steigenberger Hotel Cologne – Room

I had booked one night at the Steigenberger Hotel Cologne, from Wednesday to Thursday in late August 2024. Their Summer Special rate for that was 85.50 EUR for a Business Room. Breakfast was included as part of my H-Rewards Gold status, as well as a welcome present. Due to trouble at check-in (see below), I was not overwhelmingly surprised that the latter was missing in the room I received. I obviously got an upgrade to a larger room. The room was really nice and also felt rather modern, in contrast to my expectation. The air conditioning worked well and the room featured sufficient space for my items – it would have easily fit major luggage as well. The curtains were closed due to the heat in Cologne when I arrived. I also liked the spacious work desk, which helped me a lot – I simply had to do quite a lot of Flyctory.com work.

The bathroom was nice and spacious as well. Soap, body lotion, shower gel and shampoo is provided in dispensers. The vanity kit (cotton pad and cotton stick) was already opened by a previous guest. This leaves a bad touch to the housekeeping, which overall did a good job – the room was clean and well maintained. The shower was also spacious.

Steigenberger Hotel Cologne – Breakfast

Breakfast in the Steigenberger Hotel Cologne is served in a separate room on the first floor. The selection of items is nice. There is also a live cooking station, even though I did not see a chef there. The items I tried also had nice quality. Overall, the breakfast at the hotel was definitely within my expectations.

Steigenberger Hotel Cologne – Service

The check-in was bumpy. Part of that was that the receptionist was obviously not that well-trained (yet) and had to confirm some things with her manager. However, they also struggled with a new system. She could also not see (obviously) that my status lead to free breakfast. The worst part of the stay, however, was the WiFi. For the first two hours of my stay, I had a downstream of roughly 0.2 Mbit, a hundred times lower than the login screen stated it should be. Unfortunately, the reception also did not reply to my calls or called me back. After complaining at the reception desk during the evening, the speed got fine. However, there were still some outages I needed to bridge with my mobile network. When I stated that at check-out, the receptionist said that it is the first time he heard from that. Hard to believe – their WiFi rating at booking.com is rather weak for a hotel of that kind.

In the basement, the hotel is driving a really nice and spacious gym. There is a nice range of different fitness devices. The Steigenberger Hotel Cologne also offers spa services. There is no pool or similar facility in the hotel. The reception area features a nice snack store.

Steigenberger Hotel Cologne – My View

The Steigenberger Hotel comes with an excellent location. It is a good hotel, the rooms are nice and the breakfast is good. However, the WiFi is terrible – and the way the reception has been dealing with it during my stay is unworthy for a hotel of that kind. Bad luck, it would have deserved better.
