Baby Smith describe their music as a party of musical alchemy. The duo published their first album Lately, Love Is Dead, on 10th July 2026. I had a listen.

Baby Smith – About The Artists

Baby Smith is an Australian indie-pop duo consisting of Saxon Gable and Ray Sonder. Nowadays, they live in Berlin. There have been two Baby Smith EPs so far, suitably EP I and EP II. These have been released in 2023 and 2024. In fall, the duo is touring Europe.

Baby Smith – Lately, Love Is Dead – Track by Track

The ten song album lasts 31 minutes.

1. Adored

The Australians play save and start their debut album with three songs which have already been released individually. Adored is opening Lately, Love is Dead and comes with a present rhythm. The most striking element of the song are the high female vocals. You cannot deny a strong indie touch in here.

2. Limoncello River

The second song takes you to the Limoncello River. The song is a bit slower than the opener, leading to a dreaming, but also very relaxed atmosphere. The song is quietly meandering through an intense atmosphere. A very interesting part of these three minutes is the instrumentally dominated finale.

3. Walkie Talkie

Walkie Talkie is the third song of Baby Smith’s debut record. The chorus has a beautiful melody. A touch of synth-pop is undeniable. Echoes and reverb lead to a rather wide atmosphere, even though the song partially does not  need too many instrumental elements.

4. Golden

The first previously unreleased track of the album is Golden. It continues with the harmonic lounge-alike sound of the album. Strumming guitar chords together with synth sounds in the background lead to a nice bedding for the vocals and melodic elements of the song. I really like it.

5. All I Do

A nice sway, some string sounds, a present rhythm and a the ease of a pop track – these are the ingredients of All I Do. The song has a nice presence and comes with a nice plot. Especially the bridge nicely adds a dramatic element. Overall, it is a really nice song.

6. Take It Or Leave It

Next, Baby Smith ask to Take It Or Leave It. Already the beginning of the song contrasts with a gently flowing melody and some guitar chords. The guitars come back later in the song and tend towards Americana sound. Thus, the song comes with a special touch, but does not divert from the sound of the album.

7. Lately, Love Is Dead

Lately, Love Is Dead is a special track on the album. This does not only reflect to the fact that it is its title track or that it is the only song exceeding four minutes in duration. The very groovy style reminds of lounge music even stronger than the songs before. The song is almost a bit of jazzy here and there.

8. Don’t Look Down

A touch of beach vibes defines the sound of Don’t Look Down. In the context of the album, the gently strumming guitars and the Latin music rhythm almost feels a bit too kitschy. However, the song does spread summer vibes.

9. Have I Lost Myself Or Sense Of Melody

The penultimate track is especially profiting from the instrumental arrangements. While the song initially feels a bit of boring, energetic and angry guitar parts as well as a fine keyboard melody finally lead to an enjoyable listen.

10. Goodnight Baby

The lullaby-alike Goodnight Baby closes the debut album by the Australians. The farewell is a comparably short episode of the album – it solely lasts 2:16 minutes.

Baby Smith – Lately, Love Is Dead – My View

The couple from Down Under presents a very characteristic sound. This leads to a very fluent and fine listen of Lately, Love Is Dead. I would love the album to include some more interesting twists and surprising elements. Tracks like Don’t Look Down definitely suggest that there is much more potential in them as Baby Smith is already sharing.

Favorite Song: Don’t Look Down
