I have rarely reviewed music from Brazil in the past. In my 31st August 2026 album reviews, I heat to South America and have a look at the domestic artist Mari Froes. On that day, she is releasing her album Esquina Do Sol – “Corner of the Sun”. Here is my review.

 

Mari Froes – About The Artist

Mari Froes (civil name Mariana Ferreira Froes) is a Brazilian singer-songwriter, who was born on 19th February 2003 in Anapolis. Her music can typically be classified as the Brazilian pop style MPB, which also has samba, jazz and rock elements. She started releasing music in 2019, her debut single Moca has been streamed on Spotify only already 17 million times. Her biggest success so far, though, is Vaitimbora , which she recorded with the French DJ duo Trinix. The 2025 release was a major success in Europe, with golden records in Belgium, Switzerland and Hungary as well as a platinum record in France. Froes has released four EPs so far. Esquina Do Sol is her sophomore album.

The twelve track album lasts 38 minutes.

1. Dezenove Veroes

It’s a while ago since Mari Froes has completed “Nineteen Summers”. The press kit to the album states that Esquina Do Sol is her most intimate album so far. My knowledge of Portuguese / Brazilian is too limited to verify that based on the lyrics, but the calm and quiet song, which has still comes with a decent groove, definitely spreads a very personal touch.

2. Reza Braba

The album keeps on a rather calm style in its second second, Reza Braba. However, the typical samba-style rhythm is definitely more present than in the opener and catches you already. The jazzy, laid-back style is a nice contrast to that. Later, the song gains more and more energy and thus increases its presence.

3. Rio Lua

Rio Lua (which is also called Rio, Lua in my information) has been inspired by an imaginary summer romance in Rio de Janeiro. The song has been the only single release of the album so far. The pop-ish style with dancing beats is more present than in the two songs before. These 2:30 minutes are definitely made for a dance, South American style.

4. Garoa

After these dance pop track with regional vibes, the album takes a more dreaming and thoughtful twist again. Garoa (“Drizzle”) feels more vulnerable, even a bit of melancholic. However, the nice melodic work on the guitar does not lead to a too heavy and dark feeling.

5. Mania

Mania combines the calm, but rhythmic style of Reza Braba with intense atmospheric elements. Especially the chorus is touching and has a nice flow. Overall, it could leave a stronger mark, though.

6. Coco Caramelo

The title of this song translates to “Coconut Caramel”. Its groove is rather slowly meandering, but the brass and string melodies as well as the synth elements turn this song into a very entertaining and versatile song. It has a quite a bit of indie style, especially when the elements merge more and more in the second half of the track.

7. Rua de Pedra

This musical expedition to the “Road of Stones” is just a two minute one. Nonetheless, it does stay in mind. The fine vocals drive the track, Mari Froes nicely combines Latin American vibes with high level of musicality. The track definitely tells its story, despite the rather short duration.

8. Se Eu Nunca Mais Lhe Ver

The title of the eighth song translates to “If I Never See You Again”. The song has a song character and style and even transports sorrow and deep feelings if you don’t speak the language. The sad brass line in the background of the melody boosts that feeling. Nice.

9. Gente Fina

Already reaching the final third of Esquina Do Sol, Mari Froes reflects about “Great People”. The song is very soulful and presents a really fine melody. The jazz influence to her music is hard to ignore in this song. Nice one!

10. Eu Vou Pro Samba, Viu

Eu Vou Pro Samba, Viu (“I am going to the samba, you know?”) is one of my favorite songs of the album. The vibes of the song are beautiful. Again, it also combines the samba dancing vibes with the ease of a pop song. It spreads vitality and happiness and thus catches the listener with its joyful character.

11. Loba Solitaria

The song has a slow, a bit of sad beginning. But the samba vibes are stepping in early and you feel the spirit of Brazil and South America. There is a light ease in the song, the narrative style of Froes’ voice impresses as well. I like it.

12. Dona do Mar

Finally, Mari Froes takes you to the “Mistress of the Sea”. If you haven’t taken out your dancing shoes already, this finale almost forces you to do. You depart from the album with a smile – at least if you haven’t put the record on repeat anyway.

Mari Froes’ 2026 album is a beauty. I really like the spirit of Brazil, the dancing vibes as well as the depth of the album. Esquina Do Sol combines these elements in a really nice way – so that I could feel its energy even despite my language limitations.
