Pixbo IBK – IBF Falun 11-0 (0-0, 6-0, 5-0)

Just about a year after I have been to Wallenstam Arena the last time, it was time for another floorball trip to Gothenburg. Pixbo IBK faced IBF Falun in the women SSL on 21st December 2024 – the first match after the Men’s Floorball WFC intermission. I was of course looking forward to see the Swiss goalie titan Lara Heini again. However, with Celine Stettler and Isabelle Gerig for Pixbo and Sereina Zwissler for Falun, there were two additional players from the Swiss National Team. Falun also brought former Finnish National Team goalie Tiltu SIltanen as a backup. While favorite Pixbo was in the “eternal Swedish battle” with Thorengruppen IBK about the lead in the league again, Falun needed points to secure their spot in the playoff rankings.

Pixbo IBK – IBF Falun – Match Report

Very early in the match, Pixbo took control and managed to press Falun into their own defense. The guests, howev, acted smart in defense. Especially in the first half of it, they could also rely on their strong netminder, Jenny Alexsson. Falun gained faith from that situation and with about a minute left in the first period, Cajsa Linden ran towards Lara Heini. The Swiss national team goalie, however, denied the opportunity so that there was no score after twenty minutes.

Mira Markström broke the Falun Wall

The situation did not feel to change that much at the beginning of the second period. The pressure by the host team was even a bit higher than in the first period, but Falun gave a good fight and blocked these attacks for another seven minutes. They also did have some nice counterattacks here and there. Finally, Pixbo’s Mira Markström became the focus player of the second period. First of all, she scored the lead for her team after 27 minutes. Three minutes later, she profited from a situation which you would call a Kacktor (“shitty goal”) in the German soccer scene. A pass from behind her own goal by Sereina Zwissler, who had played such a brave match so far, was blocked by the opponent. It flew high over Axelssons goal and neither the netminder nor the defender managed to control it. But Markström did and scored her second goal in this match after 30 minutes.

A two goal advantage would still have left some options for Falun in the third period. However, they broke completely in the last two minutes of the second period. Mira Markström added her third goal in a row at a match time of 18:11. Within the 1:49 minutes left, Pixbo scored thrice – even a Falun time-out could not recover the guest’s defense. Two of the goals were by Ellen Lundin, while Axina Pettersson went for the intermission score of 6-0 at fifteen seconds left to play. You have to state that the shot statistics after two periods was 25-4 in favor of Pixbo.

Shut-Out For Lara Heini

With six attempts on goal, Lara Heini had a bit more work in the third period. Nonetheless, it was Pixbo, who completely dominated the match in the third period. Just after 38 seconds, Emma Stenberg went for Gothenburg’s seventh goal. Pointing out individual goals would likely be useless. I was especially happy that the last goal of the match was scored by one of the Swiss players. Isabelle Gerig flashed a shot into the Falun net with eight minutes to go. Pixbo won by 11-0 after having faced quite some trouble for the first thirty minutes.

Pixbo IBK – IBF Falun – My View of the Match

You rarely honor a goalie after losing with eleven goals – but that deserved merit to Jenny Axelsson somehow tells the story of the match. Falun did play a very brave first half of the match. Against the much stronger Pixbo team, the physical, technical and mental strengths just could not be held at the same level for the remaining match. Especially the last two minutes of the second period felt absolutely crucial for the decision. Pixbo’s win was maybe not as easy as the score suggests, but there was no doubt that they deserved to win that one.
