The Breidamerkurjökull Glacier in the Southeast of Iceland forms the Jokulsarlon, a Glacier Lagoon. The major and smaller iceberg being separated from the glacier are crushing into the Atlantic Ocean, which especially form amazing light reflections. This is why the natural lava sand beach in this area is named Diamond Beach. On our 2023 road trip along the Icelandic Ring Road, my wife and I directly drove along this place. Of course, we had to stop there. Here is my Pictured Story about it.

Jokulsarlon – Location & Access
The Jokulsarlon Lake is located right at the Icelandic Ring Road / Route 1, between the towns of Fagurholsmyri and Kalfafellstadur. The closest larger town, if you travel anti-clockwise, is Höfn. The city also features a gas station and a – not that frequently used – airport.
You should go to Diamond Beach by car. There are bus services, but these don’t stop for sightseeing. Of course, Diamond Beach is also part of many sightseeing tours. You can visit the place anytime (especially in summer, when the sun is almost not setting). However, services like tours or snack services typically operate between 9:00 and 18:00 in summer peak season.

Views of Jokulsarlon / Diamond Beach
The area is an absolute beauty. You have the glacier in the background, and the bricks of ice flowing into the glacier lake. While Jokulsarlon is too cold for (most) human, there are quite some birds enjoying the beautiful natural setting as much as tourists from all other world. If the smaller and a big larger icebergs have a good angle to the to sun, they either show beautiful different shades of blue – or reflections like large diamonds.

Jokulsarlon – Tours and Services
There are different kinds of tour operations, from kayaking and boat trips to amphibian vehicles. We arrived at Diamond Beach at about 19:00 local time, so that these services were already closed. I am sure that these tours lead to an even more impressing experience – I loved visiting Diamond beach without that as well, though. There is sufficient public parking as well as public toilets right at Diamond beach, which leads to a very convenient visit of this natural sight. You see in the pictures above that despite the services were closed during my visit, there was quite a lot of traffic at the remote location.
