Flyctory.com Cons

  • Poor marketing

In general I feel that the East Coast of the United Arab Emirates has a lot more potential for visitors than it is actually making use of. One example for the beauty of that region is the Khor Kalba Mangrove Centre, which I visited in February 2022. Hope you enjoy me taking you on a trip to this beautiful wildlife habitat.

Khor Kalba Mangrove Centre – Location & Admission

The Khor Kalba Mangrove Centre is located at the coast of Kalba, an city in the Emirate of Sharjah. Unfortunately, this place is not even marked properly in Google Maps. You can, however, easily reach it by car. There is a car park, before you cross the bridge to the visitor city. Golf carts bring you to the visitor center.

Adult admission to the wildlife habitat is 15 AED (less than four Euro). Kids under 12 years go free. You can visit the area from Sunday to Thursday from 9:00 to 18:30 hrs. On Fridays, you should not arrive before 14:00 hrs, Saturday opening time is 11:00 hrs.

Khor Kalba Mangrove Centre – Visitor Center

You can split the visit of the area into two parts roughly: I would definitely recommend to first enjoy the indoors visitor center, which introduces you to the plants and wildlife of this Arabian mangrove area. There is a lot of information in English and Arabic. Some aquariums and terrariums give you a good idea about the part of the biodiversity you might likely not spot when you walk outdoors later. I really enjoyed the exhibition, which also gives you the chance to look outside and look forward to the second part of your visit.

Khor Kalba Mangrove Centre – Outdoors

Before you visit the in-fact magrove area, there are some enclosed habitat, which you might want to visit first. Overall, the reserve comes with very good signs and directions, so that you finally easily adjust the visit to your needs. One of the most beautiful places is a large aviary, in which the birds feel very relaxed and you can enjoy watching them.

A bridge allows you to walk over into the in-fact mangrove area. You can use a walkway to explore the flora of the island. There are also some huts for birdwatching, which are very handy. I have been at the wildlife center a bit of early, so that it was a bit too warm. Nonetheless, I could explore some birds and another animals. Even just going here for the scenery feels to be an absolutely valid approach.

Khor Kalba Mangrove Centre – Services

The visitor center also features a cafe, which unfortunately did not operate during my visit. Kids loved the outdoor playground. The staff was very friendly.

Khor Kalba Mangrove Centre – My View

What a beautiful hidden gem on the East coast of the U.A.E.! Khor Kalba deserves much better than the current level of attention and marketing is reflecting. I loved to hang out in this beautiful scenery and wildlife. Better go here early / in the later afternoon, when the animals are more active and the birds have a better chance for prey.
