Nathan Evans (5th March 2025, Berlin)

The Wellerman gave fame to two bands almost in parallel in the early 2020’s. While I already featured the Cologne show of The Longest Johns in April 2023, I was happy to feature the show of Nathan Evans on 5th March 2025. Being in Berlin already for the Country To Country Festival 2025, I was able to visit his tour stage there, for which he was on stage with the Saint Phnx Band. Here is my concert report of his The 1994 Tour stage. Support act was Matthew Nolan.

Columbia Theater – About The Venue

The Columbia Theater, a former odeon, is located right next to the major Columbiahalle in Tempelhof in Berlin. It is right North of the former Berlin-Tempelhof Airport (THF) and comes with a capacity of some 800 spectators. It is quite easy to reach by public transport. The buses 248 and M43 stop very close at Columbiadamm/Platz der Luftbrücke. Alternatively, the U6 underground takes you to Platz der Luftbrücke. It is a short walk from there.

Nathan Evans – About The Artists

Nathan Alexander Evans was born on 19th December 1994 in Airdrie, East of Glasgow, in Scotland. He originally was a postal worker before he started posting shanties on social media in 2020. Already one year later, he topped the charts in countries like Germany, Austria, Norway or Switzerland. The reason was his cover of the Wellerman, which is a song first recorded in New Zealand in the 1970’s. In Germany and Switzerland, the song even topped the year-end charts for 2021. The song was also a quadruple platinum in Canada, a triple platinum in Poland and a double platinum in Australia and Brazil. His debut album the corresponding Wellerman – The Album peaked in the Top 30 of Germany and Switzerland. It also contains a remix of the song, which topped the British charts. In November 2024, Evans released his sophomore album 1994. It had a good success. In the U.K., one of the spin-off singles, Heather on the Hill, received a silver record.

Evans was on stage with the Saint Phnx Band, which is in fact formed by the duo Saint Phnx and an additional bassist. The alternative pop duo consists of the brothers Alan and Steve Jukes and has been formed in Wishaw, Scotland, in 2016. They have released one album, DDMN (2020) and an EPHappy Place (2022), so far. The EP topped the Scottish charts.

The concert was supported by a set of Matthew Nolan. He has been part of the band Since September, which was active from 2020 to 2022 and won the talent competition Little Mix The Search on BBC One. The band solely released four non-album singles before they broke up. Nolan is a 1999 born Irish artist from Dublin, who already released solo music before the band career. His most successful solo song so far is Maybe, which he released in 2019 and comes with roughly 15 million Spotify streams.

Nathan Evans – The Show

Matthew Nolan kicked off the evening with his almost 30 minute set on 20:00. His set featured a mixture of originals like 11:11 and covers like Someone like you. He thereby also played his successful tracks like Maybe and his latest single Hurt Like You Hurt Me. The Berlin crowd appreciated this versatile set opening the session.

After an 30 minute intermission, Nathan Evans and Saint Phnx stepped on stage for an almost 85 minute set. His first songs were Flowers in the water and Bonfire of his 1994 album, followed by Told You So. Before he played his fourth song, he asked the Berlin audience Do you like country music? – and Berlin was extremely good in the lyrics of Darius Rucker’s Wagon Wheel thereafter. During the show, Evans stated that Berlin has become a second home to him. With a bit of irony, I felt that his British accent speaking German was less strong than his Scottish accent speaking English.

Evans caught the audience from the beginning. The audience in the rather full Columbia Theater partied with hin during Perfect Storm, just to raise the flashlights of their cell phones at Paper Planes right thereafter. He performed one song fully acoustically from the audience, which lead to a very intimate session. Evans also stepped back a bit on stage for Saint Phnx songs like Death of Me, in which the Jukes brothers took he lead on stage. After just about an hour, the artists left the stage the first time – just to come back stating That’s when the party gets started. They performed another country music classic, Country Roads and their common single Home (2024). After 77 minutes, Nathan Evans announced their last songHeather on the Hill. However, that was a small lie, the set closed with nothing but the Wellerman, of course.

Nathan Evans – My View

The evening at Columbia Theater started with a nice set by Matthew Nolan and then had a really great performance by Nathan Evans and Saint Phnx. The concert was really energetic with emotional moments as well as parts where Berlin enjoyed dancing and partying with the Scottish artist. A really good time at an iconic venue – I was really thankful to kick off my Berlin coverage in March 2025 with this show.
