  • 13 songs in the typical Santiano style
  • Catching, versatile songs
  • Very fluent, fun listen

Santiano is a huge player in the German music scene. They typically sell out most of their tours. After I featured the band in 2021 and their album Wenn die Kälte kommt already, they release their eighth studio album overall on 24th October 2025. Here is my review of Da braut sich was zusammen (“Something is cooking up in here”).

Santiano – About The Artist

Santiano has been founded in 2011 in the very North of Germany. The mastermind behind the idea is Helmut Krech, a composer and producer from Flensburg. He built the band, which is nowadays still consisting of the same members. Hans-Timm Timsen Hinrichsen is a multi-instrumentalist and one of the voices of the band. Other vocalists are Axel Stosberg (also harmonica, percussion), Björn Borth (also guitar, bass), and Peter David Pete Sage (also fiddle, mandoline, accordion and bouzouki). The fifth band member is Andreas Fahnert (vocals, guitar), who cannot fully join the band due to health issues.

With their mixture of poprock, shanty and folk, they have been very successful from the very beginning. Their 2012 debut album Bis ans Ende der Welt topped the German charts and received 13 golden records there. Any Santiano album so far has topped the German charts. They are also very successful in Austria and Switzerland. The most recent album release has been the 2023 album Doggerland.

Santiano – Da braut sich was zusammen – Track by Track

The thirteen song album lasts 46 minutes.

1. Tanzen wie die Teufel

The opening track calls out “Let’s dance like the devils”. The song, which has been released as a single before the album, comes with the typical Santiano branding. You can’t really say whether the song is shanty-folk, pop-rock or even schlager. You simply enjoy the vibes of Tanzen wie die Teufel and party with the Northern Germans.

2. Da braut sich was zusammen

The title track of Da braut sich was zusammen follows next. The song is a perfect illustration that the German band is not just doing fun songs. This one is full of worry about the current social and and political situation. Mein Freund, ich habe große Angst, vor dem, was da noch kommt (“My friend, I am having big worries about what lies ahead”) they state in this second song of the record. A great listen with an – obviously – darker touch.

3. Dann bin ich weg

The third song of Da braut sich was zusammen has been one of the most impressive listens of the album promotion campaign to me. The song feels like folk-power ballad, which deals with the desire to travel far away, have some new experiences. A lovely balance of great vocals and smart illustration.

4. Belle of Belfast City

This English lyric song is an English traditional song. It became famous by a version of The Irish Rovers in the late 1960’s. Indeed, this Santiano version also spreads Irish folk vibes and stays in your mind with a fast speed and hammering rhythm. Belle of Belfast City is a fun part of their new album.

5. Ekke Nekkepenn

The Santiano fans loved the slightly dark story of Ekke Nekkepenn during the album promotion campaign. Santiano released the song in late June 2025. Ekke Nekkepenn, by the way is a figure from traditional Northern Frisia legends. He has been feared as he create storms and causes ships to capsize – just about what Santiano is telling us about in their song. The song comes with a catching rhythm.

6. Wie ein Albatros

With Wie ein Albatros, the album solely features previously unreleased songs. The song is a beautiful folk track with the typical maritime touch. The song praises life in Northern Germany or so frei wie wir hier oben nur sind (“as free as were only up here”). A nice opener for this section.

7. Nie wieder Krieg

Another song, in which Santiano sends a strong message towards society is Nie wieder Krieg (“No more war”). I especially like the marching, somehow smart arrangement of the chorus. Am I the only one who feels that this chorus feels like having a Falco melody line?

8. The Foggy Dew

With the next English lyrics traditional on Da braut sich was zusammen, Santiano focuses on a historic event. The Foggy Dew deals with the 1916 Easer Rising in the conflict between the British Empire and the Irish people during WWI. The Over one hundred years later, Santiano present another cover version of that song, which is a nice one, indeed.

9. Mein Sohn

Mein Sohn, ich war nicht für Dich da (“My son, I haven’t been there for you”) describes the struggle of sailor towards his son. The song is a mixture of typical Santiano shanty-alike parts with a stronger rhythm and a also a few darker, reflecting parts. A really good one.

10. Nach der Ebbe

This song is about the time “After Low Tide”. Harder guitar riffs welcome the listener right from the beginning of this 3:35 minute song. A cool, rocking experience, which will definitely be a favorite among the fans on the upcoming tour.

11. Wir waren jung

Weisst Du noch wie es damals war? (“Do you still know how it has been like back then?”) ask Santiano in this song. They look back to their younger years, their stronger, reckless energy. Wir waren jung, wir waren frei und kein Weg war zu weit – “We’ve been young, we’ve been free and no way has been too far” they praise their earlier years. The result is a great shanty-rocker. You simply have to sing with the band in case they perform it on stage next time.

12. Alte Seelen

Santiano jump back into the present times and call themselves Alte Seelen (“Old souls”). This one starts like a darker ballad but later has a stronger rhythm. It stays slow, though, and thus is a maritime folk hymn, which stays in your mind. Cool one!

13. Zack Ahoi

Da braut sich was zusammen closes with the uptempo fun track Zack Ahoi. Some partying and good mood is guaranteed when you listen to their new album.

Santiano – Da braut sich was zusammen – My View

These guys know what they are doing, they know why their fans love their music. Santiano just does their music right. There are fun and deeper tracks, a nice variety of songs. Still, any of these 13 songs simply feels like Santiano. You know from the beginning that this is a song by the Northern Germans. Great songwriting, great branding, and great fun while listening just can lead to a great rating as well.

Favorite Song: Wir waren jung
