I ran into the debut EP by Sue Ann, Abgeschlossen, on a promotion platform. The Austrian artist is doing pop music in German. Her EP has been released on 14th February 2024. Here is my review.

 

Sue Ann – About The Artist

Sue Ann is an Austrian artist, who is based in Klagenfurt. Unfortunately, I just got very limited press information about her. The first song releases I found of Sue Ann, whose civil first name is Susanne, are dated as of 2020. Based on Spotify streams, her most successful song so far was Ich geh in 2021. There were no song releases of her in 2022 and 2023, before she released Navi in 2024.

The four song EP lasts 14 minutes.

1. Egal

The press kit to the EP states With emotional lyrics and catchy melodies, she hits the nerve of all those who want to distance themselves from cheesy love messages. You just cannot deny a bit of kitsch in the opener Egal, though. There are some too simple phrases in the lyrics, which spoil the lovely melody slightly. Let’s see how the remaining songs will feel alike.

2. Warum

Warum is right between pop and schlager. I do like the lyrics more, compared to the opener, though. You cannot deny that Sue Ann’s song has a nice charisma and it is enjoyable to listen to the second track of Abgeschlossen. Overall a nice one.

3. Es tut weh

The title of the third song translates to “It hurts so much”. The song has a nice dramatic style and thus reflects the message of the song in a lovely manner. A really well written and arranged track.

4. Völlig fremd

In the closing track Völlig fremd (“Fully alien”), the vocal performance by Sue Ann is the best on this EP. The song is having a strong focus on the artist, just being supported by some strings and rhythm in the background. The instrumental intensity increases over time in this 3:40 listen. I really appreciate this one.

Sue Ann – Abgeschlossen – My View

Especially the two last songs of Abgeschlossen illustrate the talent and potential of Sue Ann. I would not fully agree to that the press kit statement I quoted is not fully in line with my perception, though. Nonetheless, it is a nice debut EP – look forward to more songs from this Austrian lady.
