  • Fantastic title track...
  • ... and very good songs thereafter
  • Very catching, versatile songs

The metal trio Wings of Steel releases their sophomore album on 17th October 2025. The US-American band shares Winds of Time on that date. Here is my review.

Wings of Steel – About The Artists

Wings of Steel is a heavy metal band from Los Angeles. Founded in 2019, they have already had two major releases. In 2022, they released a self-titled EP. In 2023, the added their debut album Gates of Twilight. The two main musicians of the band are Leo Unnermark (vocals) and Parker Halub (guitars). Damian Rainaud is the band’s drummer.

Wings of Steel – Winds of Time – Track by Track

The eight track album lasts 50 minutes.

1. Winds of Time

Eight songs, 50 minutes – that already tells you that this album is having some epic listen. The longest track – almost eleven minute – is the title track, which opening the album. Wow, that’s a great one. The band understands to run between darker moments, trash-alike riff fireworks, the hymnic chorus and even some rock ballad-alike parts. Ride the winds of time – this ride is definitely a promising beginning of this 50 minute journey.

2. Saints and Sinners

If you look at the duration of the tracks, the contrast between the opener and Saints and Sinners couldn’t be larger. This one is “just” a “lousy” 2:47 minute song. However, these words are solely based on the duration, the song is a great fast paced hard rock treat, which feels to catapult you back in the golden 1980’s. This song is pure fun for traditional hard rock fans.

3. Crying

Rockers are the best when they are emotional. In that regard, Crying is especially a great showcase for Unnermark’s voice, which is defining this listen. Guitar lovers will also enjoy the instrumental solo parts. Winds of Time operates at a very high and convincing level so far.

4. Burning Sands

Apart from the title track, Wings of Steel shared two songs before their album. The latest one is Burning Sands. The track has the characteristic signature of a North American power metal anthem. No matter if it is going for a slower or faster pace, it is always present and catching. A really fun track.

5. To Die in Holy War

The intro to To Die in Holy War feels rather slow, a bit of pathetic. But then, the band is firing the metal afterburners in this five minute track. The speed reminds of Saints of Sinners. This one also has the present and hymnic style of the chorus in common. The fast bridge is an absolute treat as well.

6. Lights Go Out

Lights Go Out is another five minute listen. The tempo of this one is rather on the hauling side, which adds a very different style to Winds of Time. This also gives an even more increased focus on the chorus. Again, I have to praise Unnermark for his catching vocal performance, which simply stays in your mind.

7. We Rise

Is that the somehow mandatory metal ballad on the album? The first minutes of the 6:37 minute We Rise suggest this, but Wings of Steel increase the speed and intensity of the song. Finally, this song has a great style and presence and should become a highlight of their 2026 tour in North America with Sabaton.

8. Flight of the Eagle

The album closes with the more than eight minute epic Flight of the Eagle. Similar to the predecessor, the song starts very emotional, even feels a bit of soupy. However, these guys finally want to rock you – and especially in the second half of this song, the guitars more and more take control. A very atmospheric one.

Wings of Steel – Winds of Time – My View

It’s just a little more than two months until Christmas, so that we more and more think about year-end reviews and rankings. Especially in metal rankings, this album could pop up in some of these lists. The California band has delivered eight excellent, versatile tracks. The title track is the highlight of the album, but other songs are close. I love it.
