I am really fascinated by Leonardo da Vinci and his concepts / inventions. Thus, during my summer 2020 visit to Venice, I just had to visit the Leonardo da Vinci Museum. Here are my thoughts about the visit.
Leonardo da Vinci Museum – Location & Admission
The museum is located right in the center of touristic Venice. I would recommend to walk to this place. If you are coming from a more remote location, the next vaporetto boat stops are San Toma and Riva di Biasio. The postal adress of the museum is Campo S. Rocco, the San Rocco church is right next door.

During my visit, the times of the museum are 10:30 to 18:00 hrs. This may, however, be longer outside pandemic times. Adult admission was 8 Euro.
The museum is using two floors. The lower floor is about the life of Leonardo, his works in arts and literature. You for example get a deeper inside into his Mona Lisa or the Last Supper paintings. The lower floor also introduces the different codices of da Vinci. The exhibition thereby features multiple major languages.
The upper floor rather features Leonardo da Vinci’s machines. This part of the exhibit is really cool – they put up a lot of models and also explain why / why not the da Vinci inventions are working. For some of the inventions like the self-fastening bridge, you can even try to replicate the idea on your own. There are a lot of ideas in display – from the mechanical ones to the military concepts. You can also try out a couple of things, so that the lower floor is rather educational, while the upper one is interactive and entertaining. The interaction does not feel like an issue – there was a huge number of sanitizers available.
Last, but not least, the entrance area features a nice little shop with Leonardo da Vinci items, but also general Venice souvenirs.
The Leonardo da Vinci Museum in Venice is not overwhelmingly large, but it is a nice, well-driven place. I like the combination of information and quite interactive items. Italy is full of places honoring their great son Leonardo da Vinci – the Venice is definitely not a too bad option to visit one of them.
