Great Britain – Hungary – Match Report
The British men felt being inspired by their ladies. After just 72 seconds, Tom Jeffrey stunned their opponents, scoring after an attack from central position. The match was very athletic from the very beginning. Especially the British team tried to have a lot of runs with the ball in offense – which is a very intense playbook, especially if you just have a squad of 15 players for a three-day tournament. However, both teams had some good opportunities after the first goal – but Daniel Gjika made the drum in Erd being hit a bit harder again. A nice attack in the 12th minute meant the tie of the score. Just about a minute later, Hungary took the lead by Milan Adam. This one-goal lead was also the score after twenty minutes.
Great Britain takes the Lead in the Second
The first moments of the second period felt a bit calmer than the first period. However, the British team was good in scoring early goals. Jeffrey reminded himself of that virtue in the 22nd minute, equalizing the score. His teammate Petr Pierina even added the third goal on the scoresheet, so that Hungary was trailing again, after a too slow defensive reaction. However, Hungary came back in that period. Adam Hangyal converted a really nice play n the 27th minute. After 31 minutes, a British defender could only prevent another Hungarian goal by stepping into the goalkeeper area. David Pirik went for the penalty shot and converted. The British felt to exhaust a bit now, which gave their attacks a slight lack of precision. Thus, there was no more goal in the second period.
Hungary takes the Victory with two more goals
An early goal would have turned this battle into a really thrilling fight. This time, though, the British could not succeed in that. It took a bit until the match secretary had to add events to the report. Precisely, it was Tamas Resi in the 50th minute, who could convert the rebound after a saved Szilard Harangozo shot. Hungary used the momentum and added their sixth goal by Adam just a minute later after a left wing attack.
However, the British team was ready for the fight and gathered their energy for the final ten minutes. This was also boosted by another goal by Perina, who scored after 52 minutes. Right afterwards, his team had two great fast break chances, but the Hungarian goalie Zoltan Szuri showed two brave saves and kept the lead for his team at 6-4. Hungary was able to settle and finally kept that lead until the final whistle.
A tied shoot-out
The rules of the tournament added a five attempt shoot-out. Those spectators, who stayed until the end of the match, saw a funny situation. The shoot-out score after five tries each was 2-2 – and thus, this part of the match ended with a rare tied score.

Great Britain – Hungary – My View of the Match
The last match of the first day in Erd gave the spectators a very interesting match. After the great performance on the women’s side, Great Britain definitely left a mark in thus duel. Hungary finally felt to be more complete and their opponents looked rather exhausted in parts of the match. With a constant development and some players from abroad leagues, the British team might be able to play a reasonable role in upcoming WFC Qualification tournament.
