Flyctory.com Pros

  • Nice overview
  • Combined ticket with GardeRobe museum
  • Nice location

Especially based on the fact that the Belgian capital is just some two hours away from my residence, I comparably rarely make it to Brussels. On one of my rather recent visits, I had the opportunity to spend some more time in the heart of the city. One of the places I explored was the Brussels City Museum. Here is my review.

Brussels City Museum – Location & Admission

The museum is located on the Northern side of Grand Place or Grand Square. The link leads you to my Pictured Story about the very picturesque heart of the city. It is based in the King’s House. You are right in the pedestrian zone of Brussels, to that you do have to walk a bit to reach public transport. For example, there are the bus lines 33, 48, and 95, connecting to the Grand-Place stop some 300 meters South. The next major travel hub is Brussels Central Station on the Southeast and its corresponding metro station (500m each, roughly). Parking in the heart of Brussels is possible, I would, however, strongly discourage you to go for it, traffic-wise and due to parking fees.

The museum is opening from Tuesday to Sunday (apart from some holidays), from 10:00 to 17:00. Adult admission is 10 EUR. This includes the visit to the GardeRobe Mannekin Pis exhibition, to which I introduced you before already. You should roughly allow for a one hour visiting time.

Brussels City Museum – The Visit

In general, the museum is trilingual, French, Dutch / Flemish and English. However, there are quite some exhibits and interactive screens, which also have German and partially Spanish documentation. There is also an audio guide. Some rooms of the museum also feature written detailed documentation in multiple languages. The architecture of the King’s House is already a beauty and here and there, you just cannot stop to enjoy the views of the Grand Place. The museum spreads over two floors. Apart from sculptures, the lower floor also focuses on typical Bruxelles produces like certain metal or porcelain products. Overall, this collection is very versatile and thus interesting to watch.

A major focus of the upper floor of the museum is the development and growth of the city over time. This is done very figuratively, including models of the city at certain stages. Furthermore, the house is rich of different sculptures and paintings, so that even arts fans might find some nice items. A key attraction of the museum is the original Manneken Pis figure. There are also some additional displays and exhibits about the world-famous tiny peeing boy. However, the partner museum is definitely a more illustrative place about him.

Brussels City Museum – Services

The staff was very friendly. The museum also hosts a souvenir shop. You must not bring major bags like backpacks with you. However, the museum is providing lockers.

Brussels City Museum  – My View

Not only due to its picturesque architecture and very handy location, it is worth having a look into Brussels City Museum. The museum is not too large so that it may fit into your schedule. There is quite a wide range of items, giving a nice overview of the city. Overall, it is a really entertaining and educating place.
