What would be a better posting while being on a trip to Pittsburgh than posting about… Pittsburgh. In fact, I visited the DoubleTree Pittsburgh Downtown almost a year ago. The rationale was the same – I was on the second day of my trip supporting the Pittsburgh Penguins in March 2022. I feel there is an urgent need to add this hotel review to Flyctory.com.

DoubleTree Pittsburgh Downtown – Location

Especially if you are a Pittsburgh Penguins fan, you will love the location. It is located right at the exit of I-579 and a very short walk away from PPG Paints Arena. The Steel Plaza light rail station is just around the corner as well, so that you can commute in the free transfer zone, if necessary (e.g. for a baseball or American Football match). The Central Pittsburgh attractions like the Heinz History Center are also just a short walk away.

If you arrive by car, the hotel is offering valet parking. The 2023 rate is 33 USD. You enter the parking garage yourself, where the parking attendant is taking car of your car. Especially on match days, this may lead to some waiting time.

DoubleTree Pittsburgh Downtown – Room

I had a Park & Stay rate at the Hilton Group Hotel in March 2022. The one day King Bed room reservation, including parking, was 197.22 USD. The hotel gave me an upgrade to a King Suite. The room had a bit of an unusual layout, as you can see in the pictures. For example, the large work desk was located close to the bathroom. Nonetheless, I really liked the room with the large living and relaxing area and a lot of space. The sleeping area was not overwhelmingly large, but absolutely fit for purpose. However, a great feature of this room was its view. Located in a corner, I could spot some Pittsburgh bridges, but also watch the people on Mellon Green next to Steel Plaza.

The bathroom was really tiny, compared to the huge and comfort able room. Nonetheless, it was fit or purpose. I had to store some of my toiletries outside the room, though. The suite was nicely serviced. The hotel cannot deny a certain old-fashioned (or call it: traditional) Hilton chic, though.

DoubleTree Pittsburgh Downtown – Breakfast

At the time of visit, the breakfast buffet was 22 USD. Compared to other US-American hotel breakfasts, I would say the performance was fine. There was quite some selection of breakfast items, so that you definitely felt an upgrade to minor brands like a Hampton.

DoubleTree Pittsburgh Downtown – Service

Even though there was a Women ice hockey national team match the day thereafter and thus quite some traffic in the hotel, the staff was very friendly and professional. I even received two of the famous DoubleTree welcome cookies – how could a stay start better? I also liked the nice fitness area of the hotel.

Even though the location near the street may feel odd, the heart of the hotel regarding some physical exercise and relaxation is definitely the lovely hotel pool. Compared to other places, this one is really large.

DoubleTree Pittsburgh Downtown – My View

Even though the hotel feels a bit of traditional, it is an excellent choice, especially for sports fans. The facilities are good and it is a really short walking distance to PPG Paints Arena. You need to look out if they have a good deal in store – the normal pricing of the DoubleTree is unfortunately rather high.
