  • Very versatile and characteristic songs
  • Entertaining listen

Even though my review has been rather average, I still remember the 2021 album Mersmak rather well. On 12th September 2025, the Norwegian band LÜT is back with a new record. I felt like giving him another listen and share my view of their self-titled with you.

LÜT – About The Artists

LÜT is a rock and punk band from Tromso in Northern Norway. So far, they released two studio albums. Before Mersmak, there was solely their debut album Pandion (2007). The band is a quartet, consisting of Mads Erlend Ystmark (vocals, guitar), Orjan Nyborg Myrland (guitar), Marius James Platt (bass) and Sveinung Mellem Engvik (drums).

LÜT – LÜT – Track by Track

The ten song album lasts 33 minutes.

1. Fokk D

You can almost guess what the title of the album translates to. The album starts aggressive, which also leads to a nice presence from the very first moment. The song is a nice mixture of punk and indie rock – and it definitely wakes and warms you up for the remaining album.

2. Smil & Vink

Compared to their 2021 album, LÜT feels more mature in the first songs. There is a nice mixture of distorted vocals in the stanzas and very present chorus elements, like in this song. This leads to a very modern, energetic, but also pleasant and versatile listen. I really like this feature single.

3. Opp Ned

The title of the third song translates to “Upside down”. It takes a while to get into the song, which may also be due to the language limitations – I simply do understand just a little bit of Norwegian. Especially when the sing along chorus is kicking off, I kick myself for not having invested more time into my knowledge of Scandinavian languages. I feel that in that case, this characterful indie rocker would be an even better listen.

4. Glücksschmied (feat. Bela B)

The fourth song of LÜT is in fact its first song LÜT released from this released. And suddenly, I understand them… Okay, it’s easy because this song is in German partially. Very remarkably, Die Ärtze member Bela B is joining the Norwegian band for this song. The bombast and heavy chorus is one of the key elements of this really interesting listen.

5. Komfortsona

Back to Norwegian, which is likely more of the Komfortsona (“Comfort zone”) of LÜT. The song partially feels like a duel, driven by the stomping bass drum. Here and there, the virtuosity of the track is a bit too much for me – but I feel the song is a nice fit to the context of the album.

6. Guro

The Norwegian band keeps the energy level high on their 2025 album. The sixth track Guro just lasts some two minutes, but it does leave a strong mark and presents some nice melodic themes. Thus you feel some sadness in your music heart when the track is abruptly ending.

7. Gehenna é

I feel that this one is a very characteristic song for the whole album. There are nicely rocking and energetic element, some vocals remind of hip hop. The second half of Gehenna e, also turns into a dramatic mysterious and very atmospheric listen, where you feel closer to a black metal track than to punk rockers. A nicely and wisely recorded song.

8. Perfekte Liv

LÜT’s musical journey to a “Perfect Life” is definitely one of the fast lane. From the very first moment, they opt for a speedy one. This leads to a catching, very intense song. And the necessity to take a deep breath after 2:35 minutes, when the song is finished.

9. Bindingstid Pa Livstid

You can roughly translate the title of this song with “Lifetime Commitment”. The song reminds me of Opp Ned earlier in the album. One key reason for that is the very catching chorus, to which you simply have to sing along. Very nice one.

10. Karusellen

The list ride on LÜT is a five minute ride on the “Carousel”. LÜT illustrates that they can also write epic, dramatic songs with interesting twists. This leads to an entertaining five minute finale

LÜT – LÜT – Spotify

I will add the Spotify widget once the album has been released.

LÜT – LÜT – My View

I feel that LÜT did a huge step forward with this album compared to Mersmak. The interesting, cheeky and versatile sound stays, but the songs still have a certain level of harmony and maturity. Still, there are a lot of interesting changes in the record, which makes it worth listening to.

Favorite Song: Bindingstid Pa Livstid
