Planespotting from the Dusseldorf Airport (DUS) Visitor Terrace

Dusseldorf Airport (DUS) used to be a great place for plane spotters and aviation geeks. Two visitor terraces, one at the terminal and one at the airport station, gave great views of the tarmac, starting and landing planes. However, multiple issues finally lead to the situation that both spots were closed in the meantime.

The more, the aviation community was delighted when the airport announced that there will be an exceptional opening of the train station terrace. I just had to take that opportunity – and share my plane spotting impressions with you.

This posting comes with 444 major size pictures as part of the travel gallery.

Dusseldorf Airport (DUS) Station Visitor Terrace – Location & Admission

The visitor terrace at the (national and regional) rail station of Dusseldorf Airport (DUS) is located right on the Western side of the building. From that spot, you have exceptional views of the East part of the runway. The transport connections are of course very good. The train station even features scattered national high speed rail connections. From there to the airport terminal, you typically take the SkyTrain, which I featured in a previous post. Access is via the upper level, which you reach via the escalators.

The visitor terrace opened exceptionally on three weekends in August 2025. Explicitly, these were the weekends (Saturday/Sunday) 9th/10th, 16th/17th, 23rd/24th August 2025. On each day, there were three time slots of two hours, starting at 10:00, with a 15 minute break to clear the area. Admission was free, but you had to register beforehand. I visited the visitor terrace on 10th August 2025, when the airport offered a Sunrise Special. On that day, they had an exceptional time slot between 5:45 and 9:30. Ticket registration started in early July 2025 and were – as expected – given away in a very short time. The area features toilets and there were some vending machines with drinks and basic snacks. During the “ordinary” time slots, there was also entertainment in the indoor area.

Dusseldorf Airport (DUS) Station Visitor Terrace – Plane Spotting

Compared to the ordinary sessions to the days before the morning slot was rather relaxed in regards of the audience. There were maybe 150 to 200 people on the huge terrace, which worked out well and gave great views. The terrace is huge with quite an area with good views. On top of that, many were spotters and used at least the majority of the time slot. On Saturday afternoon, for example, people came to see the Emirates Airbus A320 and left when the plane had arrived. The staff was very relaxed and friendly. Thanks a huge lot to the airport, security and federal police who made this special event available.

The morning time slot is very eventful, especially between 6:00 and 7:30. The airport was operating on both runways. 23L was used for take-offs, 23R for landings. Later, all operations concentrated on 23L. However, especially in regards of departures, there is quite a concentration of airlines and plane types. Eurowings dominates the morning with a majority of Airbus A320 family planes. Due to the summer holiday season, there were also some typical charter carriers. The highlights were rather on the arrival side. For example, Condor brought their Airbus A320 D-AICH with a classic livery from Frankfurt FRA (DE 4790) and Etihad arrived with the Boeing B787 Dreamliner from Abu Dhabi AUH (EY 133). Unfortunately, Turkish Airlines’ Boeing B777 arrival from Istanbul IST (TK 1523, scheduled time 9:00) was delayed by 40 minutes and thus did not make it to the time slot.
