On my mileage run in May 2023, I slept in two typical air room hotels (even though both were landside, i.e. before security). After I spent a night at the Premium Air Rooms at Madrid Airport (MAD) Terminal 4, I had a night at the GLO Hotel, which is located right inside the terminal of Helsinki Airport (HEL). I would typically opt for the Hilton Helsinki Airport – let’s see whether the GLO Hotel made me rethink me preferences for the next stay.
GLO Hotel Helsinki Airport – Location
After the renovation of Helsinki Airport (HEL), you head left right after you left the baggage reclaim area. There is a small aisle left of the new Premium Plaza Arrivals Lounge, from where you can take stair or an elevator down to hotel level. You typically reach the hotel somehow due to a flight – Helsinki Airport (HEL) is nicely connected by commuter trains.
Especially after the renovation of the airport, Helsinki Airport (HEL) offers a lot of interesting services. There is even a small spa at the lounge I just mentioned. The airport also significantly increased the number of restaurants avaiable and upgraded the size of the 24 hour supermarket.
GLO Hotel Helsinki Airport – Room
I booked a Smart Room, which is the standard room at the GLO Hotel Helsinki Airport. I paid a refundable rate of 156 EUR, plus the fee for breakfast (see below). The room was in the size I expected, having a comfy bed, a wardrobe, where you can also store some luggage and a lot of power sockets. Despite having no daylight, the room felt very cozy at first sight. However, I made a mistake booking that category as I did not spot that these kind of rooms don’t come with a work desk. The room should come with a notebook working pillow, though – which was missing in my room. I claimed that at the reception right after checking in and the receptionist told me that they generally don’t have that. Later, at check-out, the hotel manager told me that this was wrong and there should have been one in my room. Too late. I had to work putting my laptop on the back of my suitcase on the luggage rack. Somehow working, but my back hated me for that.
The bathroom was neat and small, but very efficient. I would have loved to have a toilet paper holder, though. The room was clean and so was the bathroom. By the way, some Smart rooms have something like a work desk and the better rooms come with a proper work desk.
GLO Hotel Helsinki Airport – Breakfast
The GLO Hotel does not have a restaurant by itself, but it is next door to the Cesar’s Restaurant of the airport. This place is very popular among airport workers. Even though the canteen style of the restaurant might not be the fanciest place you ever started you day, the breakfast was actually quite nice and offer a decent variety. The hotel charges you an additional 11.90 EUR per person and night for it. They also have a collaboration with the Plaza Premium Arrivals Lounge for breakfast. This one includes access to priority security check.
GLO Hotel Helsinki Airport – Service
Despite the receptionist at check-in gave me wrong information, she was very friendly, motivated to help and charming. Even though the hotel is located in the basement of the airport, WiFi worked very well. You did her some sounds here and there due to the ongoing renovation at the airport.
GLO Hotel Helsinki Airport – My View
Bad luck that the hotel had that work desk issue. Of course it is my fault that I booked a room without it, but the pictures are slightly misleading and the working pillow has simply been missing. This finally prevents a better rating. The room is just what you would expect from a night at the terminal, the staff is very kind. I felt that the handling of the issue was not ideal, though.
