Views of Oslo Central Station (Pictured Story)

Staying in the Comfort Hotel Grand Central right inside the terminal building meant that I spent quite a lot of time at Oslo Central Station (Oslo Sentralstasjon). I really liked that travel hub, which also offers quite some other opportunities. Thus, I decided to put some views of the rail station into one of my Pictured Stories.

Oslo Central Station – Location & Connections

Oslo Central Station is located in the Southeast of the core of Oslo City. The through station is thereby very well interconnected. Bus and tram stops are around the building, there is a direct connection to the Oslo Metro as well. There are also car park opportunities. Some of the central sights of the city like the Opera House and the Munch Museum are in short walking distance. You are also close to the fjords of Oslo Harbor.

Oslo Central Station offers regional, national, and Scandinavian travel conections. I arrived there with the Bergensbanan from Bergen in 2024. Other popular national routes are heading to Trondheim or Stavanger. The regional travel services reach up to the Inlandet region with trains to Lillehammer. There are two airport train connections to the main airport Oslo-Gardermoen (OSL). The express train Flytoget is the more well-known one with connections every ten minutes during main operations. You can also opt for regional trains, which stop there. You can also take a regional train to Oslo-Torp Airport (TRF). There are international connections to Stockholm and Gothenburg. Norway also offers a night train service.

Views of Oslo Central Station

The train station majorly consists of two major halls. The Northern main hall is more modern and also leads to the majority of tracks. In the South, there is the more historic and charming Ostbanehallen. These tracks include some of the long-distance and international connections as well as the Flytoget. Signs are bilingual in Norwegian and English and typically help you find your way. However, if you look for a special shop or service, the two halls may be a bit of confusing initially.

The tracks of Oslo Main Station are one floor below the terminal building. Some tracks offer escalators in both directions, upstairs to the terminal and downstairs to the platforms. Others just have escalators upstairs. As the walkways are step-free, this is not too bothering. I really liked that Norwegian rail VJ does give a current status of the remaining capacity of the different cars on their screens, which are at the walkways down to the platform as well as on the platform itself. These are not predictive, though, but rather give the usage at the time being.

Main Hall and Ostbanehallen

The Main Hall of the building is the more modern ones. There is an upper gallery level, which features several restaurants. The lower level includes different stores, including a minor supermarket. At the end of the hall, there is the majority of access routes to the platforms as well as the large departures and arrivals board.

As I said before, the more historic Ostbanehallen is a more charming place and rather feels like an indoor market square. It features some less basic restaurants and some food stands in the middle of the hall. There are also a few stores. The Southwest corner also hosts the entrance to Comfort Hotel Grand Central. There are additional tracks, especially the dedicated platforms for Flytoget. Both halls are connected, so that you don’t need to go outside to reach the other hall.

Apart from these main halls, there are some additional passages and lower level shopping / eating opportunities. Especially the two convenience chains Narvesen and Seven Eleven may be useful for travelers. At the passage to Ostbanehallen, there are also paid public toilets (20 NOK at the time of my visit). At its North, the train station also hosts a medium sized supermarket. You can also directly access the Byporten Mall of Oslo. Via an underground walkway, you reach the metro Tunnelbana and the Oslo City mall.
